Add master Volume to refined Fly
« on: November 06, 2009, 02:49:16 AM »
Does anyone here have a refined Fly modified to add a master volume pot? If so, I'm looking for wiring diagrams. Alternatively a point-to-point wiring diagram for a pre-refined that includes the master volume function. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Regards

Andy

Put a stacked 20k pot in the lines going from the piezo preamp mixer to the output jack. It is important that you use the lines after the preamp or you will need a pot with two different values which is near impossible to find.

So just to be clear, the stacked 20k pot takes both the mag and the piezo lines?

One other question Alex - if my pre is Graphtech Acousti-phonic, rather than Fishman, would it still be the 20k stacked, or would I be looking for a different value pot?

And a BIG thank you for all your advice!

I don't know. I'd check the value of the volume pot on the Graphtech board and duplicate that. Does the magnetic signal go through the board as well? If not then the single value stack might not work well. Any value pot will work but getting a good sweep and loading is the problem. A passive system is usually between 250k and 1000k and active system is around 10k to 20k. So if the piezo is active and the magnetics aren't you see the problem. You can get stacked pots with different values but they are custom made and very expensive. You might be better off putting on a Fishman powerchip which I know is 20k and run the magnetics through the mixer.

Here's an image of what's going on inside. It actually looks like the Graphtech saddles are summing into the Fishman powerchip, so pot #1 would be stacked 20k and #2 500k regular pot for my mag volume. Does that look about right?

Thanks again

Andy
