are 'pots' the same for volume as well as tone controls?  I have a few pots lying around (that have come out of guitars) with various values - is it ok to just swap 'em around, or is there something different in volume/tone pot construction? (ie some designed for volume only)

They are used interchangeably. They can be a different but they can still be changed. The value 250k, 500k, 1meg or the rate audio or straight rate can be different but they can still both be used.

The difference from a volume to a tone pot is that it is wired differently. "Reverse" if I'm not mistaken. The Volume "takes away" while the tone knob "adds" filter to the tone. So virtually the volume knob at 10 is "all the way on" while the tone knob at 10 is "all the way off". Thus the same pots work for both.

Reviving an old thread to ask a follow-up question...
I'm having the same issue as Patzag with my FMS and am going to buy a CTS 250k volume pot.

Should I get a sealed-premium (double the price)? Anything else special (like long shaft) that I should be aware of?

Thanks,
JP
