DragonFly Bridge Insides
« on: June 08, 2010, 06:07:49 AM »
Hey guys. I'm looking at making some custom guitars using Parker bridges but there's VERY little information about them around on the internet. Heck, I can't even find photos of the insides!
I was wondering if someone with a Dragonfly could help me?
I'd love to get pictures of the inside of the bridge mechanism to see how it was installed, etc. Just a quick pop off of the back cavity cover and some photos would be AMAZING!
Thanks guys!
Chris

Umm, no offense intended here, but does Parker know you're doing this?  Are they cool with it?

Also, there are tons of pics of the very thing you're looking for (at least of a Fly) on this very site.  I doubt the D-Fly is that different.

Other than that, welcome to the Forum. [:)]

Parker sells bits and pieces of guitars all the time to eBay sellers. They don't care how people use them (and couldn't do anything about it if they did).

But as stated, the DragonFly bridge assembly should be the same as in the current Fly - the one with a flat spring and internal balance wheel. A different type with coil springs has been used on less expensive models.

Sure Chris.  I'm sure several other Forum members would like to see pictures of your guitars, especially if you're using Parker hardware.

Just for additional information, the "flat-spring" is the original Fly bridge design since 1993.
The now discontinued Niteflys employed the similar looking one, but with the more conventional coil springs.
The Fly bridge, as said, employs patented unique flat springs. These springs are matched to the string gauge used (a 9 spring for 9-42, 10 for 10-46 and so on) to compensate for the greater strings tension.

I actually have a Fly Classic (but on another continent hahaha, hence why I couldn't go look at MINE). I'm curious becasue the bridges on eBay I'm looking at appear to be the flat spring version... but the guy says it comes with springs and stuff.

I suggest requesting a picture of the spring(s) included with the item. You'll instantly know if it's a Fly-spec or Nitefly-spec bridge! :)

In case you decide to get a Fly-spec bridge, don't forget to match the correct spring to the strings gauge used.

I have springs with my Fly Classic, so I could keep 10s on one and 9s on the other. My main worry is if it doesn't come with the balance wheel and float/bend-down switch assembly, then I might not even be ABLE to put it in a guitar I make... that or have to Jerry-rig some contraption of my own to do the same features.

Something tells me the eBay items you're seeing are likely to be incomplete.
