Introducing Reeves Gabrels' PARKER BROWN DOG
« on: August 16, 2010, 05:49:07 AM »
It's not everyday that I get to meet a guitar god, let alone acquire his personal guitar, BUT dreams do come true and with that, I'm proud to put on display Reeves Gabrels' very, very personal axe, the Parker Brown Dog.

I met Reeves in Nashville, Tennessee earlier this month to pick it up and this is what he had to say regarding it composition: The guitar was handmade by Ken Parker himself for Reeves and is the original prototype for the Parker Nitefly that was released shortly after wards. It came as an unfinished solid slab of mahogany with only neck, bridge and pick guard. Reeves had all the electronics installed to his liking which is how it remains to this day. Reeves used this guitar from September 1997 to January 2000 while playing for David Bowie, recording both the Earthling and Hours albums, not to mention used in countless concert shows. (On a side note, Reeves mentioned that he has co-written an impressive 48 songs with Bowie including Little Wonder, Telling Lies and my personal favorite: tHe heArTs fILtHy leSsON).

Here is the Brown Dog in action at Madison Square Garden in 1997 celebrating Bowie's 50th Birthday.

The guitar is made from a solid piece of mahogany, unfinished, and features Sperzel tuners in brushed chrome, Roland Guitar Synth GK2A pickup which is the main pickup on this guitar, a Fernandez Sustainer system and original compound radius neck. This neck is not available to the general public and was custom made for Reeves by Ken Parker.

Enjoy the pics and if you're a Reeves fan, give us a shout!

I have all of Reeves solo albums I like his stuff. The guitar has very Indian look to it like henna tattoos and sewn on trinkets. I can't imagine playing it but it would make terrific wall art.

That is a clever little attachment above bridge to make sure your picking hand doesn't hit the Roland GK pickup!

I totally missed that the first time around too! I had a quick look and couldn't find a pic with Bowie using a Fly onstage but I bet there's one out there somewhere...

I'm super-late to this thread, but I'm a huge Reeves Gabrels fan.

I'm just wondering why Gabrels sold such an incredible guitar.
Just hard to believe he'd willingly part ways with such an iconic, one-of-a-kind instrument.
(Maybe he needed the money.)

That's an awesome guitar.
The ultimate fan purchase.

I also like RG's playing very much.
Is he still playing Parker guitars or only his signature model (not sure which brand)?

In the early 2000s, Reeves Gabrels had a Fernandes signature guitar.

But now, he has a Reverend signature guitar:
