My Parker Artist pics (and string question)
« on: March 01, 2011, 05:01:20 PM »
Hi,

I am new to this forum. Here are two pictures of my 2007 Parker Artist.
I am used to play strats all my life. In the beginning I had to get used to my Parker guitar because it is a different beast. But I like it now.

On my Parker are 009 strings. Sometimes I think it plays too light for my taste and that I want to have a bit more string tension. But I am not sure. I don't have the 10 spring. But can I lock the tremolo and try 010 strings without changing the 9 spring? Just to try it for a few days?
What string gauge do you prefer on your Parker?

Hi.  I recommend the 0095 from D'addario.  It handles the chewy feel of the 9's without going to the too-tough-for-my-dainty-fingers 10!
I think the sets are EXL-120+

Congrats!  Great looking guitar!!!  I like 9's but then I do have the "too-tough-for-my-dainty-fingers" problem.  10's sound great, but just don't give me the ability to do the easy 1 and 1/2 step bends.  Patzag is right with the EXL 120+ it is a closer to 10's sound!  By any means . . . . Welcome!

I don't believe you will damage anything by having the wrong spring, just will have more problems with properly setting the trem and intonation. Blocking down the trem does seem like an easy solution. If you then like the 10s there are 10 springs that pop up on the bay and are sometimes available from Parker. I've gone back and forth between 9s and 10s and currently have settled on the 9s - the ease of playing trumping thicker sound at the moment.

Welcome Bodde

Gorgeous Guitar.

I have an Artist in the exact same finish but its a hardtail. http://forums.parkerguitars.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7392&SearchTerms=peachy,fly

I use 9's but have been curious for trying 10's. I worry about nut problems if i do. Can you go back to 9's after the wider strings stretch out the slots without mods?

I have wimpy fingers too. I think the 95's sound like a great idea.

I have from .009  to  .011 sets of strings on Flys, .011 on a Fly hardtail. The .0095 are a nice set of strings.I like heavier strings for chords, lighter strings for single notes if bending and vibrato.

so when locking the trem it can do no harm to the guitar when I put on the 010 strings with the 009 spring just to try?
and can I use the 0095 string without changing the spring and still keep the same tremelo setting without tuning problems?

what is the difference between mine and your Artist? What exactly is a hardtail? Does it have to do with the transparent scratch plate?

I worry about the nut too when changing to 10 strings. Or will the slots fit both 009 and 010 strings?

Hardtail means there is no tremelo. No whammy bar. Fixed bridge.

I am just not experienced or talented enough to use the whammy bar. Its all I can do to play normal. The whole whammy/spring thing scares me. I am a wimp.

My best guess is that I could go back and forth with 9's and 10's and not have a nut slot problem. BUT if I did, it would be a major pain to me so I am chicken bolagna to try it. I like low action and I hate buzzing. I live in fear of change, messing up what I got, shipping, power point presentations, and my own shadow. To me, changing strings once a year is traumatic. Changing the battery requires a sedative. I can't believe I ever garnered the courage to play an electric instrument.

But I absolutely love my triburst Artist Fly.

You can tell if the nut will fit both .009 and .010 string sets by how high the strings are off the 1st fret. And if the .010 string set will not bind up in the nut slots when using the tremolo or simply trying to tune the strings.

Thanks for all the great help!

But will the 010 strings change something in the trem/brigde setup when you block the tremelo and then go back to 009 when you don't like the 010's?
I also think the nut will fit both 009 and 010 string, but I am not sure if it the slots will be more cut in when putting on 010's. That's what I'm afraid of.

Can someone tell me if 0095 can be put on a 9 spring without tuning and tremelo problems etc.? seems like the best of both worlds.

I use 0095 with a 9 spring, no problem.  The only thing is that the receptacle for the pring has 3 slots.  I use the highest slot so it balances better.  When you open it up, you'll see that there are three distinct slots.  The slot closest to the outside (back plate) is the one to use to make up for the slightly higher tension.
On the nut, you may have to run the low E and A strings through to widen it slightly to make room for the greater diameter of the strings.  It's not an issue to go back to 9's after.  But I think that once you get used to the 0095s, you'll stick with them.

Never heard of .0095s but I'll most definitely want to try them, thanks for that!
And congratulations and welcome bodde, that's something special you have there.

Greetings...
