Favorite Tube Amp for Clean Mag Pickups?
« on: March 22, 2011, 01:19:57 PM »
What's your favorite tube amp for clean magnetic pickup sound (not piezos)?

Or, maybe ponder this question: what do you dream of when you think 'awesome clean tube amp'?

I don't mean solid state that sounds tube-like, because I build tube amps, not SS (although sometimes I use diodes instead of tube rectifiers [;)] ).  I don't have a long history playing tube amps, or really much history at all, just listening to sound clips and building what I can afford.  My Champ-esque 6V6 (or 6L6) amp sounds purty good up to about noon, and my ef86 & el84 (a-la AC-15) sounds fantastic when pushed, but just OK clean.

The Deluxe will be back from the parker shop soon, and I need to start planning this build.  I may end up using 6SJ7 preamp tube(s) and a KT-88 power tube, which should give about 15W single-ended.

Thanks for any input.  If I end up making something desirable, you can get in on it too.

Hey Chad, see my recent post on the Ceriatone HRM.  So far, this has the best tones I've heard.  Interestingly enough, the piezo run through this amp sounds very good too.
I think the Fender Twin still holds the crown for best clean only tones. (listen to Eric Johnson).

Ok, I checked it out.  I remember you put up clips of your DF through this one, right?  Sounded great.  I like that Ceriatone has layouts posted on their website, which makes it easy to see how they voiced the preamp.

VOX AC30 or Marshall Superlead. The JMP-1 has a good sound too.

The twin is a deluxe with double speakers, and double power tubes.  The deluxe sounds very, very nice to me.  Fenders are sparkley and vox are jangley.

Let's be clear on what we're talking about when we say "clean."  When I hear that word, I think CLEAN - i.e., no grit, no clipping, no breakup at all!  Is that what you mean seedlings?  I see gear demo's on youtube and the guy will say, "Here's a great clean tone" and it's half overdriven!  That's not clean!

Okay, rant over.  So how clean is clean?  BTW, Premier Guitar magazine has been advertising Port City Amps as having a great loud clean tone.  You have to have pretty deep pockets though.

To me, clean is CLEAN.  No grit at all.  Anything else is - well - dirty [^]
I get great clean tones, especially on single coils or if I use a low input gain with humbuckers.

Casey, by "clean" I mean shining clean, exactly what you and Pat are saying, *when you play with light to normal picking or strumming (or have the volume rolled back a couple of digits)* but when you 'dig in' you get just a bit of pretty harmonic clipping/compression that only tubes can provide.  I very much prefer hot bias preamp clipping (with a lower value cathode resistor) than cold bias.

*edit: I like the sort of clean in this video

The Fender Twin Reverb clean is nice, I've had my Twin Reverb cut clean through house walls to the police department. No distortion on the message you get from them if you don't turn it down. Strange, but it didn't sound that loud to me.

Clean, for me, HAS to have some break-up when you really dig-in. Acoustic guitars have some timbre break-up when pushed so that's what I want [}:)]

The Fender-sound is too farty for me when pushed.

I like the AC30, the Boogie clean from the Mark series, and Hi-Watt (maybe? been a long time since I played the real thing).

Farty fender is true, but a super easy fix.  I lean toward the jangle of vox too.  BUT we're talking Flys which have nice jangle and not a lot of lows anyway...
