I played my Deluxe for about 1 hour, then sent it back for paint repair, so hopefully I'm wong, but I think the Deluxe with DiMarzios will sound different than the mahogany with SDs.

I understand the tube bias, but the Roland JC 120 Jazz Chorus is noted to have one of the best clean sounds, and I absolutely love the tone I get from it. And the chorus is like nothing else....

Farty fender is true, but a super easy fix.  I lean toward the jangle of vox too.  BUT we're talking Flys which have nice jangle and not a lot of lows anyway...

Maybe your Fly... [;)] My FMS has all manner of pumping lows (thank you Seymour Duncan Jazz!).

JP, my Deluxe came back today and I was very, very wrong because it has the beef!  At church practice tonight the other other guitarist has an 80s Les Paul, and the Deluxe can keep up.  Neck humbucker is thick.

It's been ages since I posted here, but I couldn't resist this thread.

I'll post a vote for the Egnater Renagade. [;)]
Coming mostly from my previous Mesa background (Triaxis, Randall 50/50 rig), I can still get the rich and warm chime from it's clean chl which to this day, still inspires a "wow" for me every time I play.

Mine is currently running with Valley Arts KT66s, Golden Lion Reissue KT77s and a special compliment of 6 preamp tubes.

Lot's of great features such as it's: adjustable tube bias, tube mix, speaker impedance and robust foot pedal.

Plus it's intelligently designed master and EQ panel results in "real" tone variance with only minor dial dancing. Actually, I now only flip the toggles for my tone changes.

O.K., the commercial is over.

Paul, I'm with you buddy.  I can't wait to put a Renegade in my rig.  Right now, I'm content with the Rebel... but one day, it will be mine, oh yes, it will be mine. [;)]

My DR Z is my current fav. I traded a 1959 bassman RI for it---never looked back. My DR Z is a combo prescription ES about 45 watts---single 12 Celes. gold speaker---and 4 EL84's it gives me a calm kind of satisfaction that you only get once in a lifetime---maybe twice--since I'm old enough to remember the amps I had in the 50's and 60's---like my brown tolex 4X10 Fender Concert amp----it was sweet!!! Not many people have a Z or an opinion to go with it----they are pricey.

I've never owned one, but yes they do have a very nice sound for certain styles of music.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying a good used one I saw as a BIN on Ebay back in 2001 for $300.  At the time, that seemed like too much to pay for an amp that didn't have effects built in.  #facepalm!

The cleanest and loudest amp I have ever played is my 1971 Ampeg V4 full stack tube amp.  It's 100 tube watts but it has so much clean headroom you can't even get it into overdrive territory without going deaf.

Best clean is Fender Twin, hands down. My Mesa Heartbreaker is the most versatile amp I've ever owned though(love it). Any amp can be jangly when an EQ pedal is used IMO.

AH Those were the days dragging my V4 stack to a bar room gig that was not much bigger than my bed room[:D] That amp was a monster. I used a Boston Strangler power soak to get the sound. Crazy stuff we did back in the day. Back to the subject I have always wondered what clean meant to others. To me it was pure amp tone no distortion or brake up no clipping just that nice clean ringing tone with natural tube compression. There are some good opinions here and I like Seedlings description. I like my Cyber twin for everything. I can get anything from that amp if I'm willing to put in the time. The beauty of this amp is it's hybrid tube and DSP technology. Once I have found a particular sound it's as easy as pushing a button and it's saved for good.

in reply to the magnetic clean issue, who cares?  i remember my v-4 in 70 or so.  brand new in denver, used it in larime wyo bar that night.  got some nice early grind at 2 or three (v-4s didnt have numbers as i recall).  i dont enjoy clean.  volume or grit is necessary to get feel.  obviously stevie pioneered strat cleaN  WITH HIS WELL KNOWN amp combinations.  never got to see jimi. fender showmans aND SUPERS IN THOSE YEARS were just boring cleaN.  thus fuzz tones.  even razor clean roy buchannon's tele with reverb on ten was not my favorite clean tone.  eric johnsons lush cleans are incredible.
