Fly S2 ShazRock Custom
« on: May 04, 2011, 08:18:34 PM »
I deserve flogging for not posting this sooner, but life and work have ways of getting in the way!

This Guitar started out life as a Heather Grey S2. I picked it up on Ebay years ago, It was a player, and had the scars to prove it. It went to a local tech who did a great job setting it up and dialing it in, and it played and sounded as you'd expect, but i just didn't play it, favoring my red Classic, and Black Deluxe. I had designs on customizing it, but it wasn't until I saw what Sharon was doing at Shazrock that i really got serious. I contacted Sharon and Lisa, discussed a direction and sent my deposit and guitar.
We had a few phone calls back and forth, and discussed a new wiring job and paint colors and the finer details, and a few weeks later it was all done and back in my hands.
Shazrock is Sharon & Lisa, 2 of the nicest and most professional folks I have had the pleasure of working on a project with. Sharon's attention to detail in the paint and finishing of the guitar and Lisa's Knowledge of wiring and electronics have combined to create one amazing instrument.
The old wiring was gutted and Lisa did an amazing point to point redo, installing a new stereo jack, the new fishman piezo powerchip (modded to control tone), a push pull tone pot to split the humbucker, a new 5 way and an idea from Guthrie Govan, He calls it a Blower switch, but my pals have re-named it the 'Dump' switch. The master volume has been replaced with a pushbutton, it enables you to setup your amp in raging stack mode, dial it all back on the guitar to a cool funk rhythm or bluesy feel, then at the push of the button, bypass all of the selector switch and tone pot goodness, and 'Dump' the humbucker straight out raw.
When Sharon and Lisa called me to let me know that the job was done, I almost had to plead with Sharon to send it back to me, she did the test drive through her George Lynch Signature Stack, and was blown away at the effectiveness of the mod.
I was equally impressed, it is a fantastic mod, and Lisa nailed the design, It has gotten a lot of interest, comments and stunned looks.
I really wanted the guitar to look utilitarian, it took a while before i settled on a look, blacking out the pickups with new caphead screws, adding new Black Sperzel's and a new style modded trem arm.
The paint color is actually one i found at Lowes, Valspar 'Chimney Smoke'. I sent the code to Sharon and she matched it perfectly and finished it in a matt satin.
Cutting the old paint back, repairing the dings and gouges, and filling the red signal pushbutton hole (not necessary due to the smart sensing jack).
The finished product is everything that i wanted it to be and more, and i now play it a hell of a lot more than i did before [:)]
Special Thanks to Sharon and Lisa at Shazrock, for their attention to detail and invaluable advice.
Apologies for the Ramble.... How about some pictures!

Very cool. I have two S2s set up differently from yours and each other really a terrific guitar.

One correction though there is no such thing as a smart switch jack. The jack is a stereo jack with a grounding lug for the power. The "Smart Switch" is part of the solid state Fishman Powerchip.

I like how the semi-flat finish seems to enhance all of the curves and shape of the body - no high gloss finish to distract you.

Thank you all for the comments, Much appreciated.
Sharon & Lisa really hit it out of the park, I'd like to do another project with them, time and funds willing [;)]

Alex, thanks for the correction, edit made [:I]

I have another project in the works that's close to being done, a real wreck with a pedigree that has been given new life.
I will post when its all finished.

Paul,
The finish feels great, the neck feels slicker, much faster and is very comfortable to play.
And yes, the diffuse nature of the finish really shows off the curves. There is also a slight color shift in bright sunlight, seems to bring out a slightly green hue.

I was going to say earlier that it looks kind of parkerized from certain angles (as in the firearms finish). The slightly green color in the sunlight probably makes it even more so, at the right angle.
