cool fly bass
« on: November 29, 2005, 09:17:12 PM »
I picked up this magazine at the store and there's that original Fly bass. All carved and everything. Really beautiful. Wish I could buy something like that, with a smaller body. I remember the first time I saw a picture of it I thought it was just too weird. A little later there's this guitar on the market looks just the same.
2005 Parker Fly Classic, transparent cherry.
2006 Parker Fly Custom, majik blue.

You could spend forever picking the right amp for each string.

Welcome to the Parker forum. [:D]

What magazine was it? I am curious to see the picture. Ken Parker experimented with basses before he made the first Fly. After the Fly came out bass players were begging him to make a bass but it took about ten years before he could do it and while I like what he came up with it must be an awful lot different then his original ideas. I almost bought one a few weeks ago but I want to hold out for cherry or black four string. [^]

Some bass player extra edition, page 90. A Steve Swallow article. Just a sweet instrument. The bottom cutaway is a little different. Really sweet. I'm a guitar player, but I'd really like a Parker bass, just a smaller body, like my Warwick Thumb. That size with the Swallow carving. Perfect.

Thats totaly funny. I was totaly just thinking about the origional prototype this morning and how cool it looked. I thought i would check the bass forum and see if I was the only person in the world who remembers that article. Low and behold the top post is about just that. I think Ken did make a few of those origional prototypes but I think we would have better luck finding a unicorn.

Here is a picture of Steve swallow and the origional Fly Bass as first reviewd in bass player magazine.
As Far Is I have been able to find he is the only guy to still have one and this was probably made for him by ken parker. THis was my first exposeure to THe Fly and I think it is still the best looking bass ever made. I still remember the origional article it was a honey amber color almost orange and it was a five string. Man what a bass.

What does this mean?:
"There's no money above the fifth fret"

Steve is currently playing a custom Harvey Citron 5 string, E-C.

The one on the cover of Bass Player back in '92 was around the Parker shop the whole time I worked there. It had been left in a flimsy gig bag which left part of the finish broken. We fixed it in the paint shop but the instrument had some real sonic problems that were inherent in a lot of the early instruments with redwood necks.

Oh, I get it.  I thought you were referring to something weird on the neck, above the fifth fret.  ;)

I think that is probably because of the soft woods and the thin finish. If you look at the back of the neck which is probably maple the condition looks pretty decent. You can see hard wood inserts in the bridge area in the front of the bass used to support the bridge and string retainers probably because the body wood itself was too soft. Then the body wood pine or alder had a thin finish that wore away easily. There has to be pictures somewhere of it before the horn was broken.

Someone needs to write the Ken Parker history that's for sure.
