About $25 in materials and a bunch of elbow grease.

Thanks guys!

It was actually not that hard to do. I have wanted to do something with the Dusty Black for some time. It's nice but sometimes you just need a change. I thought about a refinish but didn't want to go to the lengths that would require, sanding etc, especially with the carbon skin on the Fly. Got to looking around and found several sites that make customizable skins for guitars. This actually the second guitar I’ve done with them, my Telecaster being the other. Took a couple of hours, a little bit of heat (hairdryer) to settle it into the curves and cutouts and trimmed the edges carefully with an exacto knife.

Some purists might scoff but it looks great, like a painted finish. It is also very thin and doesn’t affect the resonance or tone at all, actually thinner than a refinish overlay would be. If I get bored I can change it at any time, back to Dusty Black or to something completely different.

Picked it up here:  http://www.axewraps.com/

I thought it was a true refinish!!! There are a few sites offering wraps and decals.... some of them can print your own design if you provide a vector file. Pretty cheap and easy solution for someone like me who has never used an aerograph

If you clear coated it nobody would ever be able to tell, that was pretty much how they did the "photo flame" finishes. [:p]

I like it because it didn't permanently change the guitar. It was a bit tricky though, I had to pull the pickups loose and drop the electronics down to get flat onto the face. I probably should have dropped the vibrato as well but I was able to work around it. Trimming the outer edges of the guitar was the hardest, man Fly's have so many curves.

BTW the graphic is called Japanese Armor. If the Fly was a sword it would certainly fall into the Samurai category. [8D]

I also thought that this was some very elaborate paint job, looks perfectly convincing.
Oh, and a handmade Katana is indeed beautiful but I'll keep on slaying with my Parkers. [;)]

Did you put a clear coat over the top of it? I did an Ibanez of mine in white with a black Quija board graphic

I didn't clear coat it. I'd probably do a couple of test runs on some beaters before I did that on my Fly. On second thought, I'd probably send it in to Shazrock and have a proper finish done.
