My New Fly Bass arrived today!
« on: May 09, 2012, 05:16:41 AM »
WOW this is a monster - never had a bass in my hands that plays like butter! Also the amplified sound is unique (although I´m playing over a guitar amp right now). It has serial number "0303143 USA" and it has never been owned before - that is, a 9 year old instrument and a virgin! It says it's stringed with Fodera Nickel Strings (never heard of that particular brand) but that might not be true anymore given the age of the monster. Apart from a desire to share my joy with you, I have a question as well: Is there anything connected with string choice that I would have to consider?

Hmmm, NOS, let me see ... maybe "No Other Sweetie" ? or ... "Number of Scratches" ?? how about ""Necropolis of Sweden" ??? Sorry, I give up ... it certainly was GAS but I needed a bass and this one came along. I got it very cheap, less than half the normal price. Still had to sell another guitar in order to afford it.
Been playing with this thing all yesterday afternoon, just couldn't let it alone for a sec. Action was very low, tried with a higher one but found out that I have to play much softer than I'm used to and then the low action works.
Strings have been cut too short to allow for wraps around the pole (or whatever that thing is called) so I´d like to change them before the jazz trio gig tomorrow. I guess I'll just give it a set that's lying around and see how that works with the piezo thing.

NOS = new old stock, meaning it had no previous owner and was biding its time in a depot. Your initial post sait "it has never been owned before", so I guess that confirms the NOS status.
Anyway, glad you're happy with your bass. Parker got back to the low end of the frequency spectrum introducing a new bass range a short while ago, you might want to take a look to know the next new thing you'll start saving money for. [:D]

Greetings...
Nef

So now I understand - yes it was NOS. WOW I'm digging this thing now ... all the sounds you can get out of it! I've got quite a few remarkable instruments but this one is WAY OUT!! SO looking forward to the gig tomorrow.

Well didn't manage to restring the thing anyway ... but what a fantastic sound!! Played over a SWR LA12 (60W) and the drummer told me he simply won't play with me anymore unless I bring THIS BASS. They all realized how much improved the whole situation was with those clear tones. AWESOME!!
I've done quite a few very good instrument acquisitions (should this not be the proper word, please feel free to replace it) over the last few years but this is no. 1 (or maybe 2) on the list!

FWIW,  Ken was really happy about bass!  Perhaps even more so than the Fly.  Too bad they aren't being made any longer!  I wish I had gotten one.  I will run across one some day that I can afford.

They must run pretty expensive then. I doubt I could afford that.

The old Fly basses are a bit unusual looking, but play and sound like nothing else. Congratulations.
