New Bass in the House
« on: January 10, 2006, 11:59:47 PM »
I got my Fly Bass today. I bought it site unseen I had never even handled one before receiving mine. I am not sorry, darn these are sweet. It was more amazing in person then pictures can relate. The whole body is curved. And the maple caps on my transparent red have dark edges which gives it a pin striped look. The carbon on the neck is as pretty as any carbon I have even seen any where and I have seen a lot of carbon fiber. The neck is typical Parker neck in other words prefect. I hooked it to my Fender Bassman head and a 2x12 EV cab and the sounds were amazing. The range of adjustment from bright to dark with separate treble and bass controls for both the Mag pickups and the piezo pickups. The mag pickup blend instead of a selector switch. The piezo tone is another dimension altogether one I am not familiar with on a bass. I'll post pictures tomorrow.

Wow.

I guess I'm going to have to start trading in the kids, too many cool things that must be had :) Congrats Alex! I haven't been able to see one anywhere. The three dealers within 100 miles of me have never thought about a Parker bass. Enjoy!

Here is the picture I promised you. I shot it in front of my 1966 Blackface Fender Bassman amp. The cab has two EVM12L speakers so they should be able to hold up fine. But the cab is open back which I will have to change to tighten it up. I will close the back and add some batting on the back panel. If that doesn't tighten things up I might have to buy a real bass cab.

Best quote ever:
"The carbon on the neck is as pretty as any carbon I have even seen any where and I have seen a lot of carbon fiber."

If I ever get into the carbon fiber business, I am making millions off t-shirt sales with that quote!!  :)

Congrats on the bass!!!

I love the visual combination of vintage Blackface Fender (AA864 or AB165?) with a 21st Century bass guitar.  I'm sure that combo sounds sweet.  (I have an AB165 that has been Dave Allen modified - what an amp!).

Yea I thought the juxtaposition would make for a cool picture. Plus it is the only bass amp I have. [:I]

The amp is a AA165 from May of 66 at least that's what it says on the paper sticker inside. I have heard those aren't always accurate. I was surprised it sounded as good as it did seeing how in my mind I think of it as a guitar amp. It is all stock and has been gone over changing only those parts that needed it. I have all old stock tubes in it too. I don't think the Mojo replica bottom worked as well as it should it is an open back which is not what one sees on a bass rig. I did put a couple of EVM12Ls in there they are rated at 200 watts and were sold as bass rig or guitar speakers back in the 80's. I made a closed back this afternoon and lined it with some batting so I hope that will tighten things up and let me run a bit louder and with more low bass I'll try it later. [^]

Alex;

Check out these links.  It is not a sin to mod the AB165 - its considered a classic example of CBS not leaving well enough alone.  Good amp, but with just a bit a tweaking it ramps up a notch.  Even though you already have the Maven Peale [;)]

I had my amp completely deflowered and it just rips.  Squeeky clean as a whistle on one channel and an all tube ear bleeder on the other.  These mods are reversable, too.

If mine is a AA165 it is a interim model between the AA864 and the AB165 which is even rarer then the AA864. In any case it sound fine the way it is I am going to leave it stock. I don't mod old amps just maintain them.

Ok guys. I can barely get my head around the fact that the four string are the four on the top side of the guitar fret board and not the bottom. Five would just be 20% more difficult. Now if they had a six string I might feel at home. [;)]
