Video/Audio of new studio Parker "Rainbow Fly" jams
« on: March 31, 2015, 09:24:22 AM »
Hey Guys,
I enjoyed the many replies about my salmon colored shorts on the last post. I'm hoping for some more fashion advice this time. They say fat guys like me shouldn't wear stripes. Agree?  :)

Last monday we did a studio improv session with some really good players at my place.  The music is 100% improv, there were no charts, rehearsals, etc.  I'm calling this band "Groovatine".

As usual, I'm using only the Roland GR-55 for all guitar and synth tones. In the video you will also see my new iPad GR-55 patch switching rig which allows me to instantly choose from about 100 different sounds. Since everything we do is improvised, I need to have quick access to all my favorite sounds. You can also see the Strymon Timeline in use (my only external effect pedal!). I'm planning on doing a separate "gear head" video about the iPad rig soon.

Here's a link to the videos (audio is on my SoundCloud as well).

Enjoy!

Hey Roy. That's some great stuff. I'm jealous that you have some really talented musician's that you can jam with. My grandson is a guitar "god" at 19 years of age and we jam sometimes, but it's not the same unless you have keys and drums in the mix. I really like the rainbow fly you have as well. Play passionately man.

Really enjoyed them all.  Love the Fly :)

Even better when you realise it is all improv and no charts.  Thanks for posting.

Enjoyed it very nice! You have a great group of guys to jam with.

And nice Fly. I can't give fashion advice I wear fluorescent socks and shoe laces with every outfit. Keep it weird I say.
I have guitars, most are beyond my playing level, but I love them all!

Sounds nice !   I also dig the paint job on your Fly.  Looks like red strings?

Fellow Flyers,
My band Groovatine had a great gig last saturday and I have posted videos on my YouTube channel.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLdUnZlrF41OGQRGmNBjI35F7VhbP19KPH

The Fly I am playing in this performance is known as the "UltraFly" because it has all of the electronics removed - it's just the guitar with a Roland GK3 pickup which is driving a GR-55 as my only source of sound for both modeled guitars and synthesized sounds.  I have an iPad that has an app I set up which allows me to instantly select from any of 80 or 90 presets on the GR-55. Since our music is improvised, this is key for me since I don't know what instrument or guitar tone I might want at any time. You will see me poking on the iPad in the videos when I'm selecting sounds.

Enjoy!

Watched a few of your videos.  I just love what your band does and how you approach the music you play.  In my view that looks to be a dream gig setup.  Way too much fun...

Hey Roy (TheGrail),

So I watched all of your videos.  I was mighty entertained.

Two questions:
1. What's the story on the rainbow Fly?
2. Is Ralph (Keyboard player) still playing with Groovatine?  I noticed a different guy on keyboard in the 2016 videos.  Ralph's skills were beyond belief.  That guy is just oozing talent (not that you're any slouch).

Anyhow, color me wildly impressed.  Amazes me that you actually found a place that accepts (and I assume pays) a band playing improv all night.

yeah, cool stuff.  I haven't had much exposure to midi guitars, so very cool to see what you are doing.

@Noodler    Ralph Washington is very talented indeed. He is currently on world tour with a hip hop artist name Oddisee. Groovatine is a loose band that doesn't have permanent members, other than me, the ringleader.  Ralph just played with us in Feb and the new audio tracks are on my soundcloud - https://soundcloud.com/roysmith/sets/groovatine-rj3-session-2-6-2017   Ralph was also one of the "R"s in a previous improv group called "R4", tons of music here - https://www.reverbnation.com/r4jazz  I also produced a 3 song demo for him in my studio back in the '00s which is here - https://soundcloud.com/roysmith/sets/ralph-real-project

I'm lucky enough to have a good pool of amazing players to draw from for Groovatine. Each one adds their creativity and ear to the final process. We do get paying gigs locally, (not many) and I enjoy choosing the players to see what will happen. It's kind of a live 'high wire act'.

The rainbow fly has an interesting story, which I've posted here  - http://forums.parkerguitars.com/index.php/topic,15058.msg134065.html#msg134065

@Billy - thanks for the kind words too.
