String Change from .009 to .010?
« on: September 20, 2016, 11:20:27 AM »
Anyone move up from 9s to 10s without changing the nut?

I'd hate to replace or refile the nut.

Thanks guys,

Pete

Short answer, yes.

Personally, between 9's and 10's at the nut it never made noticable difference to me, so I leave the nut and change the strings and spring.
I came to like 9's so I haven't moved to 10's in a few years now but this has been my experience.

My luthier friends waffle about what is "correct" or needed.

I'd say try it and lube the nut. If it doesn't grab, you're golden. If it does, you can make a decision about filing at that point.
