Help Identifying - Strange 1996 Model
« on: July 15, 2017, 10:21:12 PM »
Thanks in advance for any and all help.

Serial Number:  127166 USA

PRIOR TO 2003: Flys will have the six digit code. The first three digits are the day of the year, the next two are the number in that days production, and the last digit is the year.

So according to the "born on" rules in that post, this guitar was built in 1996.

Now my guitar:

According to this page: (, there were only two models being manufactured in 1996, the NFV1 and the NFV2.

Now if you examine the electronics configuration on my guitar, you'll see that it matches the NFV1 setup.  But if you examine my pickups, they match the NFV2 setup, and not NFV1.  It's like it's NFV1.5, or some baby of the two models.

I bought this from a reputable guitar store in Omaha way back in the day (thinking it was 1997, but can't be sure).

Is's historical record on the Nitefly incorrect or incomplete?  Was there another model made that year?

Thanks again for any and all help identifying my fly.

The serial number explanation you quoted is for Flys, not NiteFlys. Look at FAQ #7 on this page:

The NiteFly uses a different system using either a five or six digit serial number. The first one or two digits show the month, the third is the last number in the year, and the last three digits show the number in that months production.

Here’s a NiteFly serial number example:
•Serial Number 117123
•11=(Month) November
•7=(Year) 1997
•123=(Number of guitar that month) 123

Your serial number 127166 indicates December 1997; and the pickup and control layout of yours exactly match some guitars that have been advertised as NiteFly V4s from either 1997 or 1998 - except for the color. Here's an example made in March 1998:

Parker's own NiteFly History document says this:

NiteFly 3 & 4 - With built-in Piezo/Magnetic Mixer & Preamp
(Built from11/96 to 2/98)
The NiteFly 3 & 4 models were introduced at the January '98 Winter Namm
show and begin shipping the next month. These new "improved" NiteFly guitars
were equipped with a special Fishman® NiteMix™ active circuit that allowed the
piezo and magnetic signals to be mixed right from the guitar. This new active
mixer & preamp circuit allowed the two signals to be summed in mono and
sent to one amp or to be split in stereo and each signal sent to a separate amp
selectable with a pickguard mounted Stereo/Mono switch. (Sound familiar?
Think Fly.)
Body and neck construction remained the same as the NiteFly 1 & 2.

Body: Maple
Neck: Basswood
Magnetic Pickups: Custom-wound DiMarzio®
Pickup configuration: Hum/single/single
Piezo system: Fishman® active
Bridge: Precision-cast aluminum vibrato bridge with Stainless-steel
saddles Jumbo frets: 22 Jumbo Stainless-steel
Tuners: Brushed chrome locking Sperzel®
Scale Length: 25.5"
Pickguard mounted Stereo/Mono switch
9-volt battery compartment on back
Colors: White Pearl w/white pickguard (NFV4/W)
Sunburst w/black pickguard (NFV4/SB)
Transparent Red w/white pickguard (NFV4/TR)
Black w/black pickguard (NFV4/B)
Transparent Blue w/white pickguard (NFV4/TB)

Seems to me that you have a white 1997 NFV4.
