Fly Artist serial not making sense
« on: August 28, 2017, 10:37:26 PM »
Just purchased (but not yet received) a Fly Artist, which was advertised as being a 2003 model.

Serial is 3100238BSS. From what I've read on this forum, seven digit serials started appearing in 2003, so this serial length is as-expected if it's a 2003.

However if the last two numbers are supposed to be the year, "38" makes no sense for a year.

If it were just the last number "8", for 2008, that would not add up either, as photos show it's pre-refined (tension wheel through body).

Any ideas?

I assume you bought that one off Reverb I was eyeing - It's a pre-refined '98 (the wheel behind the bridge tells you it's definitely pre-'03). I may be mistaken, but I believe that serial indicates it was the 2nd guitar produced on November 6, 1998, and is a Sitka spruce body with basswood neck.

Yep - that's the one :-) Just need to get the broken sperzel's fixed or replaced.

Was wondering at first if it was a 1998 myself. Problem with that theory though is that it's a seven digit serial, and from what I've read in various places on this forum, seven digit serials didn't start until 2003...

I may be wrong but as I understand it, there were still some pre-refined Flys being made part way into 2003.

I'm pretty sure there have been a few occasions when a Fly left the factory with a serial numbering mistake. Might have been the case here.

Hi sybersitizen, if you were to guess, would you lean more towards this one being 2003 or 1998?

Listing is here: https://reverb.com/item/5187643-parker-artist-fly-2003-spruce-amber-natural-super-light-solid-body-with-carbon-fiber-exoskeleton

The pickups offer a clue. Here's some Parker pickup lore:

From 1993 through March of 1999 Flys had the original DiMarzio pickups, which were based on the Air Norton for the neck position and the Tone Zone for the bridge position. These are identified by a DiMarzio logo, which is 3/8" long. Flys built since April of 1999 are equipped with DiMarzio newer Parker Fly Custom Neck #PHWP1, and Parker Fly Custom Bridge #PHWP2. These are identified by an italicized DiMarzio logo, which is 5/8" long.

Good point, thanks. I'll advise if they are gen1 or gen2 once I get my hands on the guitar (a week and a half from now as I'm out of town).
