Another Serial Number Mystery...?
« on: January 03, 2018, 06:44:09 AM »
I've just bought a Nitefly in Sunburst.  The Serial Number is 060059USA.  This should indicate a guitar built in June 2000.

The mystery is that it has (most) of the features of a post-2001 NiteFly SA: it has the Smartjack instead of the pickguard stereo button and it has a pearloid pickguard.  YET it also has the black rubber knobs of the pre-2001 NiteFlys, not the Chrome Domes.  Possibilities that have occurred to me:

It is a much later NiteFly and Parker changed their serial numbers;
Parker's NiteFly History document is wrong (again); or
it was a neck made in 2000 but not used until 2001 (still doesn't account for the knobs).

Interestingly, I have a NiteFly M in the oiled mahogany finish, with a very close serial number (060171), indicating also June 2000 manufacture.  But again, this model was, according to NiteFly History on Parker page, not introduced until a full year later.

Any wisdom?

 Somebody swapped a neck?

Somebody swapped a pickguard and changed the knobs?

Yup definitely possibilities (as are dealer or customer special order etc), and I'd probably think them as more likely if I had any faith in the NiteFly History document on the Parker page. I thought a factory replacement neck was unlikely just because it would be strange to put on a neck that's at least a year earlier than the guitar.   I'm inclined to think that the guitars are stock because they don't have any evidence of other tinkering (original pups, pots and wiring), but you can never know for sure.

I was hoping that others might have other guitars whose serials seem to conflict with the features in the 2000-2003 period.  It seems it was quite disorganized and it wouldn't surprise me if there was a bit of a 'parts bin' approach taken at the factory.  I wish every company was like Ernie Ball, where you can send them an email with your serial number and they will promptly reply with chapter and verse.
