Hello all,
if I am unable to get a Bronze Fly, perhaps I could achieve the same tone by stringing my hardtail Deluxe with Bronze strings?
I was thinking of using a heavy gauge like .012's.  Would this cause any problems structurally?  Has anyone tried this?

thanks in advance.

Aren't there 2 of those on eBay or reverb right now?
You can definitely get the same tone out of your deluxe, just be sure to get the right spring in there or somehow block the trem.
You may have to file the nut for that thick gauge of strings, but I have one like that which I restrung later to 9's and it is just fine!

Do a search of the auction sites.

Can you buy me that 2nd one?

That’s a terrific modification suggestion, JB! I’m curious: does anyone else here feel that they’ve definitely gotten “the same tone out of your deluxe” through the piezo and 11 or 12 gauge phosphor bronze strings?

I have a Fly Concert that I love and have considered buying a Deluxe for this exact modification/purpose.  I understand that the Fly Concert/Bronze is essentially just a Fly Artist without the magnetic pick ups, so I’m curious how much of a difference the Sitka Spruce wood makes compared to Poplar in terms of achieving the “acoustic“ sound.

I guess the assumption here is that once you run the Concert-Deluxe through an amp and compress it and add EQ and reverb, it probably sounds very similar to an actual Fly Concert. Correct?

Good thought and observation! :) I do have a 12 spring as well. Maybe that will be a summer project.

Which kind of nut do you have? a painted in nut or an easily removable one?

Yikes there are painted in nuts?  All my Flys have ones that are ordinarily attached...

I guess if you are going to 'experiment' with putting 12 gauge bronze strings you should line yourself up with a replacement nut, because if you gut the slots to accommodate the big strings you likely ain't going back easily...

Mike on Reverb sells replacement nuts for Flys, both pre-cut and uncut.  I bought the precut ones and they fit on both my pre-refined Flys (not, however, on the NiteFlys).

They don’t look like they’re painted in; early models.

One of the best non-sound-related aspects of the Fly Concert, in my opinion, is how very light it is. I suppose if I (or anyone else) decided to give this experiment a try, even if I’m successful in achieving a similar sound to the Concert with a Deluxe, it wouldn’t quite measure up in terms weight (or the look). Of course, someone could argue that removing the magnetic pickups (leaving just the piezo in a Deluxe), modifying the nut, adding an 11 or 12 spring, and setting it up for bronze 12s could be a fun project. :)

Huh, I'd never seen that.  I guess that's just something they did on the last models; I don't have anything from the last decade.  So scratch what I said about Mike's replacement nuts; I have no idea whether they'd fit an instrument like that in the picture.  The nut looks completely different from the pre-refined, refined or NiteFly models.

I just had to share this AD:
https://reverb.com/item/10575134-1999-parker-bronze-fly-guitar-w-gigbag-upgraded-graphtech-piezo-system-concert-fly

This is probably the saddest, most jacked up Fly I have ever seen (except maybe for the one the had it's horn sawed off).

The amateur paint job on the backside is the part that hurts the most.  Oh yeah and the price is way high for this condition.  I guess maybe the only silver lining on this cloud would be the indication that Parker Flys are getting more valuable?

Oh, and btw I'm still looking for a Concert/Bronze, so if anyone has one that is basically the opposite of this one, I'm interested.

peace and love,
-Luke
