Value of 97 Fly Deluxe in pretty good shape?
« on: March 11, 2018, 01:33:56 PM »
I’m looking at a white 97 Fly Deluxe with the Hiscox case.   There are some finish cracks in a few places, like from light hits. Nothing structural and nothing that’s a big deal.  Electronics look surprisingly clean.  Ribbon cables all in great shape.  Everything works right, but the jack is a little loose.  I’ll have to hunt down my spring loaded Planet Waves cables or have the jack replaced.   Truss wire works great.  Has case candy and original tools.   Interior of the case is worn from the strap button on the upper horn.

Looking on Reverb and eBay, it appears the prices have gone up since I last looked.  Thanks for some ballpark help!

Speaking of eBay, you can always see recent sale prices there:

I'm glad I bought mine during the Great Recession and before the factory closed down. I think I caught the lowest part of the price curve.

Exactly. You never know what someone out there is willing to pay for any specific guitar.

Just wondering about this. It might just need to be tightened. You don't want a 'loose' jack that can put stress on the internal flex cable.

Or are you saying a normal cable plug won't stay in properly?

A normal plug pops out every now and then.

For the jack problem, which is endemic on Pre-Refined Flys, I think the only permanent solution is to replace the jack with the Fishman Switchjack (StewMac item no. 1521, price is $15.95), following the wiring diagram posted on the Parker Guitars website.  I just did this with my '94 a week ago (same problem - jack internals became loose and wouldn't grip the plug).  The newer Fishman jack is a much, much better unit than the original Parker jack, which was essentially a bodge-job created by taking a non-switching jack, grinding a hole in the side, and gluing in a plastic switch.

As for prices, I think it's right that they've been going up in recent months, though the trend isn't universal.  Pre-refined Deluxes in good to mint original condition have been selling on Ebay and Reverb mostly in the $1500 to $2K range, I would say a rule of thumb average is $1700 or so.  However there are anecdotal stories of great deals in the last three months from $900 to $1300 range.  So it really seems to be all over the place lately.

If you decide not to buy it let me know.  I've got my eye open for a white pre-refined.

I bought it.  Gigged it.  Had the plug popping out problem.  Took it today to a tech who is very familiar with the Parkers.  Should have it back better in good shape next week.

Lucky you.  Do you mind if I ask what you paid for it?

Ive been using one of the older Planet Waves circus breaker cables for many years now, with the expanding collar type thing on the plug, actually works well to keep the plug in the socket.

Don't seem to be available anymore, but if you come across one, worth a shot.

Here's a link to an Amazon pic of what i'm talking about.
