Another pickup question-- pre refined coil taps
« on: June 25, 2018, 01:39:37 AM »
Another pickup question:

I have the pre-refined Fly where the center position is one coil from each pickup.  It's MUCH quieter than the two outer positions.  I assume this is normal.

Does this bother anyone else?  Has anyone rewired theirs for the center position to be all 4 coils?

Yes, the lower output from the center position is normal.  It can be a problem if you are not used to it.
It's too bad you can't control this from the board, like the piezo output is controllable.
I've never tried to fix this, maybe someone else here has?

from an older post...

Turns out this mod is a piece of cake simple to do and easily reversible. There are a pair of wires going from each pick-up to the selector switch just remove those paired wires from the switch. Keep them connected together and cover with a bit of tape or shrink wrap. Thats' it that is all there is to it. Now when you switch to the middle position you get both humbuckers on full just like a LP.

I actually tried that earlier tonight and I like it better, but I also want the coil tap option.  I am going to try the 6 way toggle another poster recommended.

Pretty sure those 6 way toggles won't fit into a pre-refined unless you lose the pre-amp etc.

Can't of more help here, I know I've thought seriously about going down that route in the past and didn't do it in the end..but can't recall exactly why, was a few years back, but think it was because the whole thing wouldn't fit without major mods.

Get the tech specs and a ruler...

They do look intriguing, those switches. I have an original Freeway switch, big box thing, never used it as it feels flimsy as. Pretty sure the newer design is much improved.

Edit: I see the post you're referring too below..FYI that guitar has a different much smaller pre-amp than a pre-refined, but i presume you're aware of all the differences etc.

We'll see, if not I'll put the switch in a different guitar.

What I really want is to give each pickup the option to have either coil, both, or off.  Cant figure out how to do that one (pre refined) without drilling holes.

try the freeway switch! You may have to look up its actual size under the hood, but they make them in 2 sizes and I'm sure you can make one work.
