DIY Hex Tremolo Bar - Cheap!
« on: September 20, 2018, 10:52:13 PM »
I periodically see people here on the forum looking to replace a lost hex trem bar for the pre-refined whammy. They are usually impossible to find because nobody has an extra one, and the factory is out of business.

So I had an idea to find a source of suitable 3/16 hex bar that is long enough to allow you to bend your own. This is what I found, for just $5!.

This long bar is 10.5 inches long while the factory whammy bar is just less than 9 inches. By carefully measuring and making the two bends using a vise and a vise grips, you can make a replacement bar in a few minutes.

If you want to make a foam handle to match the factory one, ironically, you will spend a little more than the cost of the replacement bar itself. This 1/2" closed foam costs $10 and can be whittled and sanded into the proper shape and put on the end of your DIY hex whammy bar.

great info!

FWIW you can get aluminum hex stock at for even less money, plus with easier cutting and bending.  2 feet is $2.99.  But the shipping... :(

They might have some foam tubing that could work in a pinch, though I'd be inclined to try some silicone tubing slipped over the end.  (Also available there.)
