EMG have a pretty small draw. I know many players who hate the things so I doubt it would make a big difference. That said Parker does have deal with EMG for the Fly Bass they call the Mojo Bass. So a Fly with EMG pickups might be around the corner.[^]

I read somewhere where an author claimed Alembics were the first active pickups.  It's probably true, but always hard to say what was 'first.'

Alembic is a company based out of Santa Rosa, CA that hand makes guitars and basses. Most are very high end. The most famous Alembic guitar was probably the one Jerry Garcia played. Their base guitars are some of the best ever made. Here's their link:

I don't know if they were the first or not, but after a concert in Santa Rosa I think it was 1984, a tech from Alembic offered to put Alembics in my daughters Ibanez base guitar. She has never changed bass's since and that Ibanez is probably the best sounding bass I have ever heard! If you've never done it, try looking through Alembics archive at all the custom guitars and bass's they've built. Very interesting. Just too rich for my pocket book!
