Pm 20 series - what do the controls do?

Here's my reply to this same question a few days ago:

"On the PM-20 -- and I *think* it's the same on the PM-10 -- pulling the tone pot (the back one) turns the bridge pickup into a single coil...using the coil furthest from the bridge. Pulling the volume knob turns the neck pickup into a single coil using the coil furthest from the neck."

In other words, pulling each pot turns off one of the coils in each pickup, giving you single-coil tone.

You mean I'm supposed to play more than one note at a time? Oh.....

Understood the first time, but was not fully explained so will ask again.  These push-pull pots have been around for a long time but I have never used them, so please forgive my ignorance of the situation.  Only trying to learn how to use them in conjunction with the 3 way toggle. Thanks

The  3 position switch was not explained so let me give two examples of what I *think* happens and you can let me know if this is correct. (I suppose I can always "scrape a screwdiver across the tops of the pickups and try to  determine volume, tone and "phase" of the pickups ....but I would rather not. :)

Question one and two  explain what I *think* the guitar is doing with some random settings.
But neither of these questions address how to get the pickups in-phase or out-of phase with each other.  So I ask that in questions three, four and five.

QUESTION ONE:  IF
1. The 3 position switch is in "center"
   then BOTH PICKUPS are activated
2. The Volume pot is pulled up
then Neck pickup is in single coil mode
3. The Tone pot is NOT pulled up
then Bridge pickup is in humbucker mode
4  The Volume pot is turned up "halfway"
then OVERALL volume of both pickups is halfway
5. The Tone pot is turned all the way up
then OVERALL tone of both pickups is most "trebly"

IS QUESTION ONE CORRECT?

QUESTION TWO:  IF
1. The 3 position switch is in "up" position ...
then only NECK pickup is activated
2. The  Volume pot is pulled up ...
then neck pickup is  single coil mode
3. If the Tone pot is not pulled up ...
It doesn't matter if it is up or down since it is not activated
4  If the Volume pot is turned up "halfway" ..
then OVERALL volume of ONLY the neck pickup is halfway
5. If the Tone pot is turned all the way up
then OVERALL tone of ONLY the neck pickup is most "trebly"

IS QUESTION TWO CORRECT?

QUESTION THREE:
I would like to have the neck and bridge pickups in singe coil mode and in-phase with each other?
How do I do this?  Is it possible?

QUESTION FOUR:
I would like to have the neck and bridge pickups in singe coil mode and out-of-phase with each other?
How do I do this?  Is it possible?

QUESTION FIVE:
I would like to have the neck pickup in humbucker mode and bridge pickups in singe coil mode and out-of-phase with each other?
How do I do this?  Is it possible?

Thanks
K

OK, I hear you. When you posted what (to me) seemed to be the same question, I thought you'd missed the original answer. Let me see if I can clarify for you.

1. Pickup selector switch in UP is front pickup. In CENTER it's both. DOWN, it's the bridge p/u.

2. Volume is an overall volume, so when the p/u selector is in CENTER, both p/u's are "balanced".

3. Tone is overall tone, no matter what pickups are selected. All the way on (fully clockwise) gives you full treble. As you roll off the knob, you lose the top end.

4. The pickups are always in phase.

Here are your 8 combinations:

1. Front pickup alone as humbucker -- neither knob pulled, p/u selector UP

2. Both pickups together, both humbucker -- neither knob pulled, p/u selector CENTER

3. Back pickup alone as humbucker -- neither knob pulled, p/u selector DOWN

4. Front pickup alone as single coil -- Volume knob pulled, p/u selector UP

5. Front pickup single coil and back p/u as humbucker -- Volume knob pulled, p/u selector CENTER

6. Front pickup humbucker and back pick up single coil -- Tone knob pulled, p/u selector CENTER

7. Back pickup alone as single coil -- Tone knob pulled, p/u selector DOWN

8. Both pickups single coil -- both knobs pulled, p/u selector CENTER

Your questions one and two are both correct. Answer to your questions three is my 8, above. And you can't do what you ask for in four and five without having a phase switch installed.

Hope this helps. If you have more questions, ask away, ok?

Yes thanks. That pretty much explains everything.  Guess I was making things more difficult than than they really are.
All the sounds are fantastic "right out of the box"  I am pleased with the stock pickups.
I will post a different topic on the phase of the pickups.

Thanks again
K

I found this on page 25... just for you who may jump to the conclusion I didn't look before asking.

Lane is giving the impression that the pickup selector in the middle position gives full humbucker use on some, while the coil taps would affect one pickup but not the other.

Maybe some sort of printout of the wiring diagram is all I would need...but for schematically challenged individuals someone might want to lay out a better diagram.
So tell me again, where are we going, and why are we in a handbasket?
