I think that Charlie Hunter guitar is a great idea. As nice as some people think seven string guitars are, let's just skip the middle man and go to eight! In an evolutionary way, it makes all kinds of sense. It, too, would be financial suicide. But it sure would be a fun ship to go down with.

"let's just skip the middle man and go to eight!"

First its 6...then 7.....then 8...where does it stop?

Do you really have the fingers to support all those strings?

I know you love your guitar but for the good of humanity can't you excersize some kind of string control ?

Think of all the other instruments base, violas, cello's...what if they all start wanting more strings too ?                     [:D]

Well, I've read that Charlie Hunter says that is that he approaches playing guitar as if it were an organ - that's why he does the simultaneous bass & guitar parts, and hence the custom 8-string guitar.

I have his very first album, which was produced by Les Claypool. I forget what it's called, I don't have the CD case with me, but it's tasty. And "Bing, Bing, Bing" is a cool album, too. I need to hear some of his newer stuff.

EDIT: Anyhow, "Frank Kufo" is no longer on the memberlist, so I think he has been deleted! [^]

EDIT #2: Or was that guy frank01? OK, now I've confused myself. [:I]

There's already an instrument for this kind of thing. It's called a Stick, made by a chap named Chapman. 10 strings, I think, designed to be played all two-handed tap style. They don't make 'em any more (I think?), but I've seen them on Ebay once in a while. Tony Levin used one with King Crimson on occasion (like the intro to "Elephant Talk" on Discipline). Just thought I'd throw the idea out for those who might not know about it. I've always wanted one...

I know about Levin and The Stick. But, if we are still talking about Charlie Hunter, he's not a tapper, he's a picker. [;)]

I actually know a local luthier that made (and plays) an 8 string that also has the Novax style fanned frets. I'll try to find a pic. It's unusual, to say the least, but he's pretty good at it.
I'll have to check out Charlie Hunter, sounds interesting. The reference to an organ earlier made me think tapping style.

Sorry to bring this back to topic, but I receievd the "Dearest One" scam letter last night. One would hope that the makers of the most technologically advanced guitar could protect their website from low tech scams directed at members...

Please don't confuse running a web site with making fine guitars.  Running a small open source forum is not easy.  You just have to accept the fact that hackers and scammers will keep trying to find a way to get your personal information.  Keep your virus software up to date and just delete the junk mail.  Its also not a bad idea to maintain a "forum email" account so your main personal account isn't used on forums.

OK, to set the record straight, in fairness to the guitar, I'm a classical player, primarily, who played a Bronze ( then the "Artist" I believe), at a friend's shop in W. Concord in 1992 or so. I remember it was so much fun playing unplugged we couldn't believe the resonance. I ended up having to wait until this spring to buy one (my good fortune). The guitar is terrific, played through an AER Compact Acoustic Pro and I have only good things to say about Parker. This guitar is every bit as good as the one I played in '92 (if not better) and has really cool stage presence, especially for my style of music!

However, I have not received Nigerian scam emails from any other forum.

A small price to pay, but annoying nonetheless.

Sincerely, John Dana
