Major or Minor...
« on: February 22, 2007, 12:36:05 PM »
There has never been any doubt, I'm a "minor" guy. I just like the harmonic possibilities minor and diminshed tonalities offer. I especially like harmonic minor. Some people prefer Major keys and tonalities. I guess I've always liked things that are somewhat stark in their beauty. Mountains in the winter, all kinds of visual art. Dark humor (I try to keep it light around here, but I'm usually not only twisted, but actually sprained). There IS power in the dark side...

If I played A9 in open position, 3rdless, with just the open B string, without any context, I would want to resolve it to the minor, because that's how I'd hear it.

How about you [?]

I'm a major and whole tone kind of guy, and I love to use things that sound rather ambigious like 5 chords, sus 4th chords, 7#5, etc., etc. [:I]

BUT, when it comes to scales, I do like the Phrygian Mode and Melodic Minor a lot. Oh, and we can't forget the ever useful Minor Pentatonic scale.

I'm partial to Maj chords. I like music that finishes on a bright note. Going from a dom7 to a dom7 is cool. A9 to E9 to AmM7 could work.

I'm a minor guy as well. Over a major chord I like to play a minor run in the relative key. However, if I am soloing over a minor progression, I will grab a few major licks as well.

I'm a harmonic minor, diminished, and Phrygian kinda guy, but I try not to get stuck on one mode or chord scale.  About the only thing I don't use is the pentatonic major scale (country = yuck)

Definitely prefer major sound. Of course, I do a lot of bluesy stuff where the major/minor boundary tends to be blurred...[:)]
