Disappointing. I seem to recall forum member "number 2" finding some Koa. Chime in at any time for some help with this if you could!!

I'll still talk with Parker, if I can... it's still worth a phone call if it pans out.

Here's a reply I got from one vendor of exotic woods:

quote:

Hello,

Nice to hear from you.  We recently had another inquiry for a very similar piece.

I attached our price list.  It is highly doubtful we'll have a single piece for the 16" wide, but you never know. But we also rarely have 2 1/2 ~ 3" stock. Mostly 2" thick is our max.

If you have the patience and are willing to take green we may end up with something rather than never.  It is possible for us to take a custom order on something like this, but it isn't cheap and the actual BF is quite a bit for a hunk of wood like that. We would cut at least 3" (a little over) x 16" minimum (might be larger depending on us trying to gain maximum useage of the wood, meaning we wouldn't leave behind 2" of wood if the width turned out to be 18" instead of your desired width) x 2' long. That could be 8~10BF and cost roughly $1500.

In case you are wondering, with that one hunk of wood, we should be able to yield 12 tops and we sell the tops between $125 ~ $150 / top (we get 4 slices per inch) and we have standing orders for the kind of material you are looking for.

Hope that didn't scare you off, but that piece you are asking for is quite rare and quite in demand.

Aloha,

jorma

You could buy two 8 inch wide boards and glue them together in the middle, maybe even book matched style. An 8 inch board will cost less could be a lot less. Email them about it.[:D]

alrighty, ive been away for a little, but i just got back and i read this very interesting post! First off id like to say that Koa can be found in large sizes! Winkler woods is a small family run company in Hawaii and they are setting me up with some 5A flame Koa sized up to 16x20x3 for the body, It is bookmatched however!

In the process i was contemplating many options but i ended up with koa! I thought about 5A claro walnut and black korina. There have been many thoughts for me, but i think whatever you put in the guitar will be great! so long as it isnt an overly bright wood.

And for the koa i paid significantly less than 1500 dollars, so dont get hosed by the guys at exotic hardwoods tvadakia!

If it is book matched it isn't one piece. If it is for a Fly make sure the glue they use is compatible with the oven baking carbon setting process or the glue will melt out from between the pieces of wood. Warning warning Will Robinson...[:o)]

Hey, number 2, decent idea, except it was Jorma Winkler at Winkler Woods that handed me that quote.   If I went book-matched it'd be an entirely different song-and-dance with the pricing. As much as I'd LOVE a solid one-piece, I don't think I'm going to be able to.

Lumber dealers that deal exlusivley or specialize in "luthier" work tend to charge prices that are way above the market price.  The only reason they can is because a lot of people are lazy and don't want to put the work into searching so they go to a specialist and spend.  The same can be said about most walks of life.  I'm not saying it's bad, I'm just saying that's the reason they can charge a lot.  There is no difference between a dry piece of koa from a standard lumber dealer and the luthier quality lumber from teh specialists if they are both defect free and dry.  They're catch phrases to draw you in, follow some of the advice above if you are up to it, search and you will find.  A one piece Koa body will be hard to come by especially with a lot of figure, and it will no doubt be expensive, but it is possible.  Keep in mind though that a bookmatched body can usually offer even more stunning results.  ie. you don't see too many one piece PRS Private stocks!  Pay very careful attention to the glue as Alex mentioned though, very important, to be safe you might be able to send them the wood and let them bookmatch and join it.  I'm sure you'll save some money that way.  Good luck.

yeah the problem was that i couldnt find anyone to do a one piece, and i think the book match will look specatcular anyways. Im going to have parker glue it up  just in case. I dont think it makes a noticeable difference if its one piece or 2. its more of an asthetics thing. either way it will sound great!

A lot of great advice from everyone here, thank you all. I'll be digesting a lot of this and doing some more in-depth searching with everything in mind.
