Paul Gilbert tops my list, not only is he an amazing player, but I just love his attitude (he seems to be kind of a happy go lucky guy. I remember some of his old instructional videos, he struck me as really personable) His playing is a happy medium of the rock I grew up on in the 80's, and just all out brilliant shredding. I have quite a few of his pieces, his blues stuff, fake classical, etc. It seems that he likes to poke fun at himself (but the playing is still very serious and very good)

But that is the very short list.....but I do miss the expansion of guitar playing that was happening through the 80's. The decade started with Van Halen and Randy Rhoads and ended with Mettallica, Megadeth, Vai, Satriani, SRV, and lot of other great solo players and bands - all guitar driven. I know I didn't cover it all but you get the idea.

Aggreed, Paul Gilbert is an amazing player! My top 6 list would be

1. Stevie Ray Vaughan
2. Rory Gallagher
3. Jimi Hendrix
4. Matt Bellamy
5. Eric Johnson
6. Paul Gilbert

I look for a guitarist playing with feel rather than speed king. Although, speed kings such as Steve Vai and Joe Satriani play with feel, theres no doubt about that.

Not mentioned so far:  Alex Lifeson, Marty Friedman, Allan Holdsworth, and Brett Garsed.

Telecasterkid, +1 on Daniel Gildenlöw and Roine Stolt.  Not very well known players, but both are incredibly tasteful.  Don't rule out Pain of Salvation's other gun, Johan Hallgren, another tasteful shredder-type.

Roine Stolt is the reason I am getting a Parker, his tone is awsome.  His playing is on a whole nother level than most guitar players out there, the man has the most emotion in his playing I have ever seen.  Cant wait for my mojo to get here!  Should only be a matter of weeks now.

Steve Morse - not just for his playing, which is awesome and varied (hard rock, classical, shred, and MIDI guitar), but for his compositional skills. Also his dedication to his music and his fans. Still gigging off and on with the Dregs after 30 years and still tearing it up like no other rock-fusion instrumental group ever has.
