Fly Concert Is Here
« on: June 25, 2007, 09:37:58 PM »
Well, I resisted the temptation a week ago to drop an extra $110 and have this overnighted in. It finally arrived after almost a week after winning. I held my breath as I took the case out of the box and opened.

I was...

Drum roll...

Mildly surprised. First, it was a much darker butterscotch than I've seen on other Bronze, Concert, Spanish, Nylon or Artist Flys. I gotta say I LOVE the color. These photos are a little dark, but they capture the color very well.

The guitar was kinda dirty, and it seemed as if the strings had been on since 1997. Anyway, I worked the day away, wishing I could carve out time to set it up. But alas, to no avail.

Finally got it home. Took off the old strings, cleaned the surface up, Maguired the surface up and polished it to perfection. There are still a couple of very shallow scratches on the back - barely noticeable.

Put Elixir NanoWeb Bronze XL strings on (10 - 47). Set the action, straightened the rod, and began playing it. All I can say is...

WOW! I had no idea. I'd messed with the Cedars at NAMM, but never in a controlled setting. This guitar is amazing! The sound and playability is something that I wasn't prepared for at all. I am in love with it.

Here are some pics....

I have included several of the control cavity. As you can see, there is no provision of individual string volume, so I guess that must have been just a rumor. I was a bit surprised by the sparsity of the whole thing. Can anyone else with an older Bronze or a Concert please let me know if this is stock?

Anyway, that's the tour for now!
Bob

Wowee

Thats one of the prettiest bronzes I've ever seen ! [:p]

You are a very lucky Bob indeed.

Does it sound like an acoustic or like an Artist on piezo only ?

PS Nice photos and thanks for them [;)]

I was hoping that it was a good one because the photos in the listing weren't very good.  Looks like you have a really sweet new addition to the family.  Congratulations!

I love the colour of that Concert Bob!  It looks so beautiful, I hope I get a chance to strum a few chords when I go on leave this winter!

Those guitars without humbuckers really bring out the beauty in the Fly shape.
And that warmer finish gives it a very old world vintage aura.
Like on an old violin just class for days. Very nice.[:0]

Simon - the tone is different than the Artist on Piezo only. For starters, it's got independent Bass and Treble controls that REALLY make a difference. While I've never put bronze strings on my Artist, you can tell right away that this is a different thing. Perhaps if I can find the time, I will try and record some A/B comparisons under identical circumstances.

The finish: this really surprised me. Next to my Artist it's about 2 or 3 shades darker with more red in the color. I don't think it's got quite as much red as the photos indicate - it plays in real life a bit more like a rust tint to the yellow - Alex nailed it with the violin analogy. Also almost looks as though the spruce was rubbed with something to make the grain a bit more pronounced - there is a noticeable dark tint to the lines in the spruce (see the closup).

Anyway, I agree -  a lucky find and one I am quite glad to have!

I agree with Alex about the look without pups. Did I read somewhere that this was what the original concept was? Anyway it's beautiful, that makes four doesn't it, who's got the most flys on the forum?

Absolutely beautiful.  I've come to the personal conclusion that these guitars are the most beautiful guitars of the Fly design.  Clean, elegant, stunning.  I want one.  Congratulations.
