Custom S3 pickups
« on: November 09, 2007, 10:47:40 AM »
Hey guys I just noticed that the custom S3 made for our administrator didn't use Parker's style pole mount pickups but used end mount screws. I have mixed feelings about this but I think this is probably a better way to go in the long run.

How about an update on your experiences with this gorgeous guitar?

The pickups are Duncan SSL. They're stacks. We were going to go with the regular DiMarzios but the SSLs have a standard Strat footprint which leaves the path open to replace them with a much wider choice if I ever decide to do so. Also, the CNC plans have this route programmed in case this becomes a standard or special order item which leaves options open for other pickups. (Just reread this and realized it's not a standard Strat footprint but closer than the Dimarzios.)

I love the guitar and it will replace my Strat as my main electric 6 string. Unfortunately, my time has been spent building a studio in my basement and I haven't had a chance to play out with it yet. I'll actually be jamming with a group of people tomorrow for the first time so I'll be able to give a better report then. The one thing I don't like is the whammy bar is too big for the way I play. I replaced it with my Strat bar (which is black & matches the rest of the hardware) and it feels much more normal to me now.

Gorgeous guitar. It really should be a regular production model, especially given that your traditional guitarist is already enamored with S3 designs.

I had the chance to play my first gig with the new guitar last month and was very pleased overall. I've been using it as my exclusive electric 6 string in rehearsals. The between settings have some glorious spank. In 2 weeks I've got an all acoustic gig and I'll be using it in strictly piezo mode. I'd like to do some tweaks and mess around with it a bit but my work bench is buried at the moment. I'll probably bring it to the factory tour for those folks to check out.
