Neck Woes
« on: May 08, 2006, 10:19:45 PM »
I just bought a used Fly 5 string bass and promplty took it to my local tech for new strings and a set up.  I like a low action but he told me that he was unable to get it very low.  The first 5 frets are fine but then the neck bows out slowly and creates a very high action.  He has the bridge all the way down and the truss rod to the max.  Is this something I can get fixed by the maker?  I'd like to keep this baby but just can't play it....Chris

Hey i was wondering if there was away to remove the nexk and place a shim.  This would do the trick.  My tech did it on my 5 string jass with a bolt on?  Chris

Welcome to the Parker forum. [:D]

Wish it was under better circumstances. Call Parker sounds like you need to send it back. If it is a 2005 it might be under warranty still. The neck can not be removed it is built into the body. And there is no way that you should not be able to adjust the neck straight.

Your description is a little weak what do you mean it bows out? Is the space under string higher at the 5th fret then at the 12th fret? Is the space normal under the 5th fret and way too high under the 18th fret? In other words is the neck bending forward from string pressure or back from too much truss rod pressure?

Good  Morning - yes I am dissapointed. Such great revues, high cost and bingo can't get it to play well.  I'll try to give a better description again.  The first 5 frets or so the action is very good then as I climb the neck towards the bridge the action gets higher and higher.  Not really a dip so much as the neck starts isn't able to get straight enough to be consistant with the action from the nut to the 24th fret.

Another dissagrteement I have over the bass is its electronics.  For me way to much but what I dislike is not have center detents in the tone and PU selector so I just don't know where neutral is.  But that is is a diff. subject.

How would I go about contacting the company?

Thank you...  Chris

Loosen your truss rod. It sounds to me like your tech doesn't know what he is doing sorry. Your neck is bent back by pressure of the truss rod pulling away from the strings. This will only happen if the truss rod it too tight other wise the strings will pull the neck forward and the neck will be bowed with the largest gap in the middle. If the truss rod is loose and it isn't bent forward you have another problem. I assume you're running normal bass guitar strings? And tunning to normal pitch? Either too light of strings or too low a pitch can also cause trouble like you are experiencing. You can find their service number under the banner for the "tech-talk" section of this forum. 1-800-877-6863 [^]

You might try changing the knobs with ones that have numbers I do this on my Fly guitars. So I can tell at a glance what my settings are. I probably will do it to my bass as well. I find those aluminum knobs stupid and heavy. I didn't buy the lightest instrument I could just to through all those extra onces on with knobs.[V]

Isn't he saying that the neck is bowing in the direction of the sting pull?  An overtightened truss rod would bow the neck away from the string pull and he'd have fret buzzing at the middle frets, but he's sayong his strings are getting further from the fretboard as he goes up the scale.  Isn't he??

On one of my 5's, I have the bridge saddles set-up way down and the other has them set up WAY high.  Both necks, in terms of truss rod adjustment are set up just about the same.

Hmmm...There seems to be some issues with some of the necks on these basses.  The truss rod is incredibly responsive but I have found that when you get it "just right" for the upper frets, it's slightly buzzy on the lower frets.

Maybe a new nut will fix your action woes?

RE: Lack of center detents.  Yes, it's a huge bummer if you rely on your on-board EQ to know EXACTLY where you are when you record or play live.  BUT, the quick fix is to take out a small allen wrench and tweak the knobs so that "visually" the white marker dots line up in the center.  On my basses, when all the knobs are up/"full on", all of the white dots on the knobs face me.  When my pickups are split equally between the front and back pickup, visually, I have my dot facing the opposite direction.  The dot facing me would indicate that I am getting the neck pick-up full on.

So, just unloosen the knobs and figure out what visual setting works best for you.

Hope this helps! ;)

Gentleman:  First off my neck is pulling out with the strings not bowing back away from them so that is why my action is higher as I play down the neck towards the bridge.  My bridge is also all the way down.  It is possible my tech doesn't understand the neck truss rod can't say for sure because there just aren't that many of these inst. out there.

As for the detent knobs I thank you all for the work arounds

I will try the tech support number first, seems my only avenue othere than to sell it.

Chris

Well that's the problem trying to diagnose problems over the internet. It doesn't make sense to me that the neck is being pulled by the strings because when that happens I would describe the gap as bigger in the middle of the neck and smaller at each end like a bow. If the gap is biggest under the 24th fret then the neck is bowed back not forward. Anyway I can't see it so you're probably right.

If you push the string down against the 1st and 24th fret is there a gap under it any where?

Contact Parker I am sure they will want to see it.

My Fly bass doesn't have dots on the knobs they are just black. I could of course rotate them around so the screw shows up when full on but I don't care for the knobs in any case.

Took my hurting $2200 dollar bass to a tech whose store sells these and he agreed that the neck was screwed.  I played a 4 string and it was very diff.  So I guess I'll just sell it.  Went and bought new Steinberger QX-25A I think.  Only $1250.  Not the stick which I bought last year and returned in 1 week.  Got it today.  Action exc, and with 2 emg PU's with center detents it blows the Parker away.  Take care and thanks for your thoughts, good luck and keep rockin.    Chris

Guys-my neck stinks on my parker as well. The factory said send it back and they will fix it but I do not have 4 mo. to wait for it. I am going to sell it and I am going to buy something else lightweight. These basses are a great idea but it seems that the factory doesn't have the neck concept down yet. I bought the bass over the net and should have known better without playing it first. Oh well-thx

Did you sell your Parker bass?  If so, how much did you sell it for?
