fly deluxe refinish project
« on: January 29, 2008, 11:54:01 AM »
Hello everyone! Long time Fly player-first time poster here. I have had a dozen or so deluxe, classic and one mojo over the years and it has come time to refinish my '97 deluxe again. I thought I might share some photos along the way. This particular deluxe was originally white and then refined yellow about 5 years ago. Somehow Me and Jose' Cuervo managed to break off the upper horn at a show so after some reconstructive limb re-attachment surgery I refinished it in white base coat with holoflake sparkle in the clear. It looked so good that I then took my 98 hardtail deluxe and refinished it in black holoflake which looks incredible. That guitar is now my main axe.

I have a good friend named Dean Loucks that owns a world class design & paint shop called "the art of design"
http://www.taod.org/
We have come up with a theme for the formally white Fly Deluxe that will incorporate traditional colors along with a new chrome paint process for a look similar to the JS Chromeboy Ibanez. I can't wait to finish it and share the experience with some fellow Fly fans.

Here is the white fly in finish prep mode. All sanding was done by hand and the process took about 10 hours. Man there are ALOT of contours to be careful with! The black is a primer which helps spot imperfections along the way since white hides alot of them.
I DONT FEEL TARDY...

This is going to be fun!  I loved watching Simon's Artist refinish process.

Good luck!

Welcome to the Parker Forum.[:D]

Please post bigger but not too big pictures. I would love to see in better detail how you're doing it. I have a S2 that is pretty nicked up and I have been toying with the idea of refinishing it. Or even semi refinish and relic. I don't know yet just dreaming. Anyway we'd love to see more I am sure.

Welcome to the forum Dave! [:D] I'm in a similar situation with my Fly Artist that could use a new finish. I would like to see your work a little more close up as well! I'm sure you have lots of insights since you have lots of Fly experience. I love to hear from different points of view! [;)]

Thanks for the well wishing! I'll try to resize the photos from now on. I'm hoping to begin spraying by the end of this week.

"I don't feel tardy" I always loved that line.

Yea anything under 800 pixels across is great. I usually decide the size based on what I am trying to show a picture of some detail might be cropped and shown at 600 pixels while a picture of a guitar from a distance might only be 400.

Hi Dave,

While I'm interested in the new refinish project, I REALLY want to see some closer pics of that hardtail too!  Man, the holoflake looks AWESOME (far as I can tell [:p][:I])...

I hope you're done with that evil Mr. Cuervo.  Try Herra Durra - MUCH better takillya and you won't find your guitar in pieces in the morning.  [:0][:p][;)]

Herra Durra....doesn't that mean "Horseshoe"?
I forgot that TAOD painted that guitar.....I was laughing when I had to tell them that they put the "love" upside down on the headstock!

I have sprayed the black paint 2 and clear coats on the fly deluxe. Tomorrow will be wetsand and buff time. It will need to sit for 3 days before I can spray the chrome paint on it. I will add photos when I start that process. I plan to have the face of the body in chrome and the back of the body and neck in another solid color. I'm not sure which color yet....possibly red or orange pearl with some sort of graphic along the edge where the chrome meets the color.

That holoflake effect is really cool. Almost looks like a bazillion stars in a telescope lens. [:0]
