Hey Simon,
The mighty Dann Huff, and part time Fly player, said that there are a shed load of fast players with feel and a shed load of slow players without feel. Have a listen to Paul Gilbert's extended solo on "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" (Yellow Matter Custard DVD, basically Mike Portnoy's one night Beatles Cover Band) and you could not get more emotion into a passage of playing.
If you're Paul Kossof or Eric Clapton you need to get the maximum feel from each note. If you go faster the feel is often found in different aspects, note choice, phrasing, the fact that the eighth repeat of a phrase has a change of note incorporated. It isn't going to be the slow bend or vibrato. For me some of the fast phrasing is absolutely inspired and it moves me. I have friends who do get it and friends who don't. One of my favourite players is Ty Tabor. He said that after listening to Van Halen's debut he wanted to put his guitar away for good. Then he realised that his task was to do something distinctive, not copy the crowd. I'm so glad he stuck at it [:)]
For me Steve Vai has great feel, he is one of the few guitarist who can do humour as well as intensity, Satch has great feel when he pushes himself and has a wonderfully unique tonality, Paul Gilbert has a fabulous vibrato and a great range of expression, Dan Huff can bring 8 bars of joy to other people's AOR tatt, Ty Tabor just has a brilliant touch fast and slow, Jennifer Batten was a superb foil for Jeff Beck, John Petrucci is a genuine band player and unearths some amazing stuff, Steve Morse, Alan Holdsworth, Nuno Bettencourt all can go fast with feel. The world of music would be the poorer for the loss of any of these. Simon go fast with feel, go slow with feel, you have something unique to contribute [8)]

Simon I was more than a little surprised that my post seemed to upset you so. This thread is about feel, it is posted on a forum and that automatically means it invites opinion. I just gave mine that's all. I realise that the the majority of the active members here are shred-heads, but I'm still entitled to my opinions. I had no intention of ruffling any feathers, but the number of times I've witnessed the savaging of people by certain members of the inner core around here means that ultimately I don't give a toss.
Another reason I was taken aback by your reaction involves me quoting from your opening post.

I used to revel in playing slow and melodic improvs gradually going deeper into my emotions until I was really transmitting what I was feeling. I've been so caught up in trying to reach a pro level that I'd forgotten about doing this for a long time. Anyway I was practicing this feel and trying to maximize the range of dynamics etc.

What you said you were attempting to do there is exactly what I said was lacking in the Vai/ Satriani pieces. It's about content to me.

The only thing that exists is this moment now.

I don't think I sound upset at all in regard to you Yoyo. I probably could have left your name out but I was referring to your post. What you hear as the ultimate feel just isn't to me. I don't like the way it makes me feel. The fact that we are all different is what I was pointing out. It's not that your example was lacking feel it just isn't my style of feel. Same as mine isn't yours. So I could put all the feel I can into something but if it doesn't make someone feel a certain way they will perceive it as unfeeling.

I really don't see how you think I sounded so upset with you? I am a little irritated that my heros are used as examples of people that don't cut it.

Don't take anything personally guys. I think we have a couple of  generation gaps here, with different musical preferences and perceptions, that's all.

I have feel and I'm sick of people telling me I don't. It's just not the same as everyone elses because my goal from the start was to not be like anyone else.

I think Peter Green was influenced by John Lee Hooker on that song. Ol' John Lee is one of my favorites.

I think you're right BW and Hooker's one of my favourites too.

Back to the subject of feel here's a shining(non blues) example.

oooh, Lowell George. Isn't it sad to think what some of these guys who passed so young (Lowell, Jimi, Wes, Charlie Christian, etc.)would have evolved into?

Absolutely Tom, I'm well into Lowell, Jimi, and Charlie, but I want to thank you for reminding me of the utter joy that is (or was) Wes Montgomery. First dab on YouTube got me this gemstone. How the hell does he do that just using his thumb? And get a load of this for perfect quartet playing. Everbody is loose and yet so locked together you couldn't get a cigarette paper between them.

And let's not forget what this thread is about. FEEL. If anybody can find me a better example of feel I'd be very pleased to hear it. Cheers Tom.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a3Emxez982s&feature=related
