Another picking discussion - alternate strategies

When I'm picking and there's a small pause in the picking pattern say from 16th notes to 8th notes I tend to pause and then start picking again. I've seen a lot of instructional vids where the player keeps the pick going at the same speed but misses the string on that note. I do this when I'm strumming but not single note stuff it just feels weird.

Seems like a waste of energy hovering over a string, still in motion.???

Yeah it seems like a waste to me too but I think Guthrie Govan was among the people that kept the pick going.
