Based on his youtube video, your teacher is in love with himself.  And excuse me, what kind of @#*hole tells a new student that his attitude toward his guitar is wrong.  Even if you came into your lesson, obviously babying your guitar, it's none of his business.  Perhaps when he establishes a solid musical and personal relationship with you, he could then bring up his point in a more subtle way.  But this guy is a sch@#ck.  Find another teacher who's nicer.  What a jerk!  I've been a professional musician my whole life, and no one, NO ONE who's really good, has an attitude.

I'd find someone good to take lessons from. All the speed in the world is positively useless if there's no musical content - and I ain't hearing a shred of it there, if you'll pardon the pun. Self-celebrating-w.anker if you ask me. Find someone to teach you real guitar. Then when you know how to play that, you can come back to His Holiness and ask him what he means when he's playing nonsense riffs...

Seriously, find a jazz guitar teacher to get you going on WHAT to play and how to make musical sense, no matter how far out you want to go. Then you can come back to this musical master of putting worms on hooks, if you still want to, and learn all that fast picking crap. However, while figuring out WHAT to play, you'll probably come to learn how to play a million miles an hour anyway without some tude-monster dissing you.

Hearing him play is like listening to a lot of disconnected words said really quickly: bird-trailer-spaghetti-box-engine-string-leaf-photo-ugly-wedge-green.

I'm not kidding, lose this loser.

With respect to his ability, he knew within 5 mins of me playing what I had to work on and I have to say that he was spot on and that its made a big difference to my playing. But I agree with you guys that are saying that he could have done it in a more positive way. I wont be selling my parker ever and will continue my lessons to gain what I can out of it. At the end of the day I think he is a bit odd but has been the first guitar teacher that I have met that is able to push me on.[:)]

Yeah, after viewing the video - what they said.  Pretty much "bird-trailer-spaghetti-box-engine-string-leaf-photo-ugly-wedge-green" says it better than anything.

Well there's certainly a chip on the shoulder there!

He has a valid point about whether you own a guitar as an instrument, or as a trophy.  There are stories of squash players getting a more expensive racquet, and their games suffering because they are afraid of breaking it on the wall.  Only you can answer that one, not your tutor.

If your choice is a Fly then it has some characteristics that make it a very good student guitar.  Especially the light weight and the very playable neck

It's also true that many of us have too many guitars.  Changing instruments has a negative affect on your playing.  It's much better to stick with one instrument, and know it well. That's what a sax player or violinist would do. So I wouldn't support getting another guitar just for lessons and practice.

Really? That's the guy? I'll admit he can do things I can't do (about 1/2 the time, he muffs a LOT of notes in this video). But then, I'm not trying to play like that. His attitude is awful. My first impression was correct. A whanker in every sense of the word. Surely there is someone with a better 'tude.

Gad what a twit.

Hey, Patrick, check this guy out. I don't know what you want and need in the way of guitar instruction, but Rich Severson is a beautiful cat and would enjoy helping anyone out.
Check out some of his YouTube lessons. He's based in California, but he hits livingrooms everywhere in cyberspace, when summoned.

Back in the day, as I wrote earlier, you'd have _loved_ MIT in the mid-late 80s. Scads of guitarists doing their best Gambale/Gilbert impressions because that became all the rage.
Sweeps, arpeggios and wickedly rapid alternate picking as fast as their little paws would play them (or trying to play them). I thought at times the guitarists were competing with the drummers ...

Yeah, the video isn't complimentary, is it?  Nor does it play well on the second viewing.  Ah well. The guy doesn't seem into it or connected to it. Whatever 'it' is for him.

(wasn't Spaghetti Box Engine's big hit "ugly green wedge?")

Geez-R-EEE, what a wancker !

I just now saw his video. Gavanda The Great ? Are you kidding me? You actually get in the same room with this guy and shut the door?

I can see why you need to bring a cheap guitar to his lessons. Anything he could possibly teach you would be covered in slime.

Run like mad dude.

Of course I'd bring a cheap guitar to his lessons.

I wouldn't want to get my Fly dirty hitting him over the head. [:P]

The video looks like a response to a video posted by a student as he keeps saying things like 'I would do it this way' and 'you could do this' but if he is trying to offer advice to another student, how on earth would that other student follow the advice or corrections?  If he is offering advice he should be doing it slowly and deliberately, not so fast he can't play it himself.  He also looks like he is on speed!

I agree with others to try and find another teacher.  His attitude stinks.  A teacher should be looking to help you progress as a musician not be there for his own gratification.  Have a look on http://www.registryofguitartutors.com/ for another teacher in your area.  I would suggest trying 2 or 3 to see how you get on with them and to make sure they are on your wavelength.

In all fairness to the teach, he was making a specific response to a specific student and just using U-Tube as a handy way to correspond, so this response was not composed for happenstance viewing, and we are seeing it out-of-context of their established relationship.

Maybe so, but that doesn't excuse the attitude this guy exudes. That's his response to a student? Missing notes and sluffing the rest? Talking down from on high? First class jerk, and a sloppy player is all I see here. I wouldn't take a lesson from him if he paid me.

He's opened the whole learning proceedings with an edict, ergo he is a dictator. I suspect he is about to teach you his way of playing the guitar and that his way is the only way worth considering. Keep the guitar get another teacher. In fact forget the teacher plunder the internet, cd's,dvd's, books etc  observe and teach yourself. I think that's best way although I've taught several people to play.
The only thing that exists is this moment now.

That's this dude as a kid. He's made some progress; that's why a number of folks study psychology: to learn more about themselves.

I've never owned a guitar rasty enough to consider doing with it what ought to be done in that guy's case: impalement.

What's with the big block letters on his guitar's body? HC...head chunk?
