Title: FINISHES GUIDE
Post by: Marco76 on May 04, 2008, 05:43:39 PM

The Unofficial Guide to Finishes
Used by Parker U.S.A.

The photographs below show finishes that Parker has done in-house at one time or another for one or another of their models. Not all are currently available; some are available only on select models; some were Custom Shop work. The general order of these listings: the metal flakes and metallics, the other opaque finishes, the transparent finishes, the satins and pearls, and other Parker finishes. A sampling of some unusual customer's work appears at the end. A diligent attempt has been made to provide the factory-correct names and color codes, but these cannot be guaranteed. Custom finishes and pre-US Music finishes may not have color codes.

None taken. As I say, this is a first effort. We can proofread, fill in blanks, and set this up as a real reference.

What do you mean "Gold" and "Butterscotch cedar"? [:)] Seriously, I'm pretty sure the Plum are correctly labeled; maybe bad color balance in those shots. [If the powers that be let me continue editing this initial post, I can continue to make updates.]

One that I question is "Gloss White," a dealer's label. Someone mentioned "Storm Trooper White." ?

Great post! Should be sticky'd IMHO. We're still lacking a few... Trans Green and there are a couple of shades of blue missing, but it is fairly complete. I'm sure we can add them and get a complete picture catalog  soon enough. Well done, Marco... a toast is in order. Where's my beer...

Thank you! Nice collection :) I'd go for Trans Honey. Then on the other hand I really like the Tangerine.

I am flattered by your thanks and your comments... your comments that assume that I know anything more than is in that listing. This is everything that I have or know. Let's do this:

One list is finishes that are known but for which we have no photos. If you don't got one, I don't got one either. I'll add a "missing" section to keep track.

One list is what I've been working on. If you have a photo of an unpictured finish or a better shot of one that is pictured, post it here, and I will edit it into the listing. Be sure to tell me if it is metallic, Custom Shop, year of production, model limitations, or whatever, because otherwise I probably will not know.

Hey don't forget the Supreme's actually had 2 burst colors the first 10 or so I'm told had a 2 color Tobacco burst like mine (see link if you want one of the pics) and then they went to 3 color sun bursts.  Also, the fly maple classic had some sort of deep red finish, I don't know if it was the same cherry color or not but I remember it looking deeper.  Great job!

Just got back from local dealer. Picked up one new color, a custom shop order called simply Silver. Photo is off colorwise. Oh well. Also saw a Dusty Black Mojo. At least as currently produced, that is NOT a metallic finish.

I do not doubt you. Maybe you could find me a photo of Dusty Black that is clearly metallic and find out for us what name Parker uses for the solid black that I had labeled Dusty?

By the same token, I have labeled one "Red Red" and another "????" until we have verified the names. (It takes a little time to add the labels and reload the corrections, so I may just let these ride until the dust settles.)

Post by: Marco76 on May 11, 2008, 12:57:12 PM
Carmi, look at the 3rd item in the "Show Us" section of the board.

Bucky, thanks. I've incorporated the photos. Regarding Gold and Antique Gold, I also do not see a difference that could not be accounted for by the variations in lighting and color balance of the photographs. (Similarly, there are some photos that are undoubtedly the same finish but that look quite different. For those cases, I have often included two or more photos because these variations help give a better idea of the true color. See Italian Plum for a radical example.)

So... my procedure favors getting a sample up with a label and making corrections later. When someone posts a photo and gives a description, I am seldom in a position to second guess the info. For example, I have taken at face value the description "Purple Sunburst" - a non-metallic finish - though I cannot tell from the photo whether the finish is metallic or not. The photo variables are one reason, my own limited knowledge is another. And, in the case of people submitting photos of their own instruments, they tend to know what their own guitars are, if they have enough interest to be posting here anyway.

Sometimes the provided description does give me reason to question its correctness. Sometimes the description that I am given and use on the posting comes under question by one of you. In these cases, I will probably use a "?" in the description until I see a definitive post or a consensus. This does not mean that I feel disdain for whomever has provided the description or raised the doubt. It is a matter of preferring to have something included while sparing myself a series of re-editings of an unsettled debate.

The moral  of the story is to be encouraged to share knowledge and opinions, but please do so in a genial manner. (Not that anyone has not done so - it just tends to happen in chat board circumstances.)

Also, I am not trying to assemble an album of all of our instruments. I am picking and choosing for the one-to-three images that seem to best depict the different finishes. In some cases a single image is perfectly sufficient, such as the ones for the Four Seasons series. I am not particularly looking to include unusual hardware, woods, or historical interest except as they bear on the various finishes produced by Parker. Other threads will be more rewarding for pursuing those interests. I know that the first of us to get one of the Four Seasons is going to be sharing photos, and we are going to be dying to see them, but they probably will not show up in this thread.

So... Please do submit any photos of missing finishes and better photos of depicted finishes, but please do not be put out if your baby does not become a finish example.

I'm always interested in making corrections to the Guide. Let me ask a few questions. Are you telling us that one of those images is a photo of your specific guitar? The pre-refined or the refined?  Is the hang tag a vendor item? (I believe that the refined is a Mojo Flame. Can't explain the S-D pups on the pre-refined, but I am no Fly historian.)

Why I am double-checking: Your ad. mem. status makes me hesitate to question your statements, but identifying the transparent burst finishes is particularly tricky, and, as far as I know, I have never run across a color known "officially" as "Trans Cherry Burst." There is a Cherry Sunburst (CSB, depicted), and I could imagine that the pre-refined example might be a CSB. But I believe that particular guitar belongs to another of our correspondents here who specifically identified it as a BCB, or was that you?  It is not uncommon for vendors to be mistaken about the color names of their inventory, and I have not found that Parkers are shipped with any manufacturer documentation of the color or the color code. Was that info included with pre-USM instruments? Otherwise, I do not know what to make of the hang tag.

Marco and all:

How about "we" individually document the Koas, the Snakeskins, and the Summer and Fall Mojos, which are all limited and numbered--since each is at least somewhat distinctive?

If we had pics of, say, 10 koas lined up we could admire the different patterns and start squabbling over them. Same with the Summer and Fall Season Mojos. Yeah! Let's do it, right here! Or in a separate section of its very own! How cool!

Then as they came up for resale on eBay every once in awhile we could moan about shoulda coulda woulda on Autumn #5...but if #17 ever turns up again, the sky is the limit. Or maybe people ain't into it that much.

Go ahead, Marcos: do as I tell you.   Hey, just funnin'[}:)]

Hope I didn't just nominate myself. And if someone has already proposed this idea, I apologize for stealing your thunder.

I like the idea. For any of these limited production runs with unique woodgrains, etc., we could catalog them by series number and serial number. Also do the Quilt Maples and any one-offs or Private Reserve instruments with unique materials/appearances. Maybe move the checkerboard and such from the Finishes Guide to this new one.

The Finishes Guide is already a little unwieldy (300+ lines of message code), and anyway, I think that this project deserves its own post-it status ("COLLECTIBLES GUIDE"?).

As for finding someone to compile this valuable archive, I can only say that, if nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve. [:P]

There's a bunch of these things up on eBay right now, so they should at least be documented on someone's hard drive for posterity.

Unfortunately many have come and gone already, and who knows when and if they'll resurface on the nets. Some of the dealers keep their sold merch online, at least for a while.

Hell, let's just start it as a group effort. It's not gonna necessarily grow as large as this topic did. Or, if so, it can be split into subtopics. I don't like your proposed title very much, though. [:(!]

It'll be fun: "Hey, you'll never guess what I stumbled across on Houston Craig's List! Missing number so and so!" Good, clean fun, that's what we're all looking for, truth be told. [^]

Double-check me on this, please: The photo from the eBay listing that Florian has kindly provided seems to me to be a better depiction of the same guitar shown at the end of the Limited Editions Guide as "Claro Walnut."

I do a sort of a fingerprint analysis, trying to match unique patterns, and I find many matches with these two instruments. Start with the upper bout, for example, and compare the graining.

I will include the Proto #2 info with whichever seems to be the better photo.

Question about the "flat black" and I guess other "satin" finishes.

Are they difficult to keep clean? What about sweat, fingerprints, dust, dirt, grime, and so on? Do those sorts of junk penetrate into the finish so that to remove them requires a careful rinsing with distilled water perhaps?
Is the surface easily scratchable, and when it does get scuffed, how can the marring get buffed out without leaving a different sort of sheen, making a bit of a mess?

Seems like a possibly delicate finish, despite its manly [:D] look.
Title: FINISHES GUIDE
Post by: Marco76 on September 24, 2010, 05:03:55 PM
That's a lot of good questions.

USM has used at least two different methods to create a satin or matte finish. I was told that the more recent method yields a finish that is harder than the previous method did. The earlier method could get more easily "polished" down by hand motion, like along the back of the neck. I believe that was done by a special clearcoat that cured out to a satin. The newer method, I believe, is done by an application of an activator or something to the standard clearcoat.

The older method was more difficult to produce because runs or other defects could not be buffed out like the standard gloss can. Now, once the looking good in gloss, the satinizing is very predictable.

My guess is that you are correct that it would be almost impossible to touch up a scrape to a satin instrument and match the finish.

The feel of the satin neck, though, is so nice!

Not that you asked, but a comment or two about the appearance of satin finished Flys:

With a Natural or very transparent color, the look is a tiny bit odd. Here's what I mean: a gloss finish mimics what we are used to seeing as a varnished surface, and we do not expect to see much woodgrain texture. A satin finish has a similar resemblance to what we are used to seeing as an oil-stained surface, and we do expect to see the grain texture, but it is not there. The satin is as uniform as the gloss, but counter to expectation, and so it almost looks plasticky.

On the classic metal flake paints of the Fly, the gloss coats have a lot of the "depth" that auto finishers go for. The same colors with satin finishes look a tiny bit darker and distinctly more monolithic, like anodized billet aluminum. In my opinion, both are great looks.

I have seen in person Tangerine, Emerald, Plum and Antique Gold done in satin. The Gold looks like a billet, the Tangerine was a very satisfying anodized look, the Emerald was very rich looking, and the Plum was inky deep purple that would turn out some surprising highlights - you'd think it was matte black until a strong light hit it. I haven't seen them under stage lights yet; that will be very interesting to see.

That's no dusty black at all. I'm pretty sure it's a prismatic (see page one) with the flakes reflecting different hues at different angles. I guess the difference in sparkle density is just a matter of how much of the effects paint is applied. I like the look of that one a lot, it's very similar to a finish I once saw on drum set, can't remember which company though. If this is skipped by most because of the title it could be a very special guitar for an awesome price. Let's see how this one turns out.

I just picked up a metallic flake gray '94 hardtail Fly deluxe.
Does anyone know an "official" name of the color?
Serial number 076044bp, the "bp" is lower case, which I haven't seen before.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks

Sorry I'm not able to post pictures.
Closest I can come is Galaxy Gray out of the '08 Parker catalog. Very fine/small metallic flake.
I've only seen dusty black hardtails that's why I ask.
It plays like a dream.
