Title: With heart in mouth and file in hand...
Post by: Big Swifty on June 13, 2018, 08:29:19 AM
Soooo.... after 24 years the frets on my deluxe were in fact showing a little wear, and i'd been noticing it just wasn't really playing as "cleanly" as i remember it being....

Soooo...after ringing around and almost falling off my chair at how much a fret dress on SS frets was going to cost...if anyone was prepared to do it...or had even heard of a Fly, let alone how it was put together..i figured, bugger it!

I'll do it myself!

Soooooo... after a fair bit of Googling and a bit of practise on my other guitars...

Started on an old Epiphone Dot, note the fancy DIY notched fretboard leveller thing in the background..

(http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/b469/parkergutiarstuff/IMG_7025_zpsklizo9v5.jpg) (http://s1046.photobucket.com/user/parkergutiarstuff/media/IMG_7025_zpsklizo9v5.jpg.html)

Then tried the Ibanez..(this one turned out real nice!)

(http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/b469/parkergutiarstuff/IMG_7031_zps3wh2zapx.jpg) (http://s1046.photobucket.com/user/parkergutiarstuff/media/IMG_7031_zps3wh2zapx.jpg.html)

Having a go at my DF in preparation, DIY levelling beam...(Still can't bond with that guitar....)

(http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/b469/parkergutiarstuff/IMG_7032_zpsqxhlof5a.jpg) (http://s1046.photobucket.com/user/parkergutiarstuff/media/IMG_7032_zpsqxhlof5a.jpg.html)

Finally, patient all prepped and ready to go...

(http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/b469/parkergutiarstuff/IMG_7036_zpspfraxsjt.jpg) (http://s1046.photobucket.com/user/parkergutiarstuff/media/IMG_7036_zpspfraxsjt.jpg.html)

Frets to the right of the file done, to the left coming up next! (Single cut file from the local hardware, cost about $10, ground the edges off)

(http://i1046.photobucket.com/albums/b469/parkergutiarstuff/IMG_7038_zpsbo9eycyp.jpg) (http://s1046.photobucket.com/user/parkergutiarstuff/media/IMG_7038_zpsbo9eycyp.jpg.html)

Then a final polish with varying grits of sandpaper and voila, turned out great!
Plays smooth, action nice and lowish, the only thing is i didn't get quite the same rounded shoulders on the frets, they feel a slightly squarer than they used too, but nothing i can't get along with. That SS is quite hard...and i aint going back in again!

At least, not for another 20 odd years or so....

You, sir, win the post of the month club no-prize!

That is fantastic. Maybe you will bond better with your df now. (But really, isn’t a df a backup guitar once you have your fly?

Nice work B. S.
Looks very pro.
It’s amazing how motivated one can get when price is a factor.

Woohoo! Post of the mo...wait..no prize??!!! *sigh...

Yeah, i did actually get the DF as a backup, very early model, when they were still called Dragonflys, and also because I didn't actually have a single coil guitar at the time.

But..i dunno, i think the neck is too thin is what it is...love the shape and feel of the body and all that, but...maybe i should just try harder..

P.S. Do you think there comes a point in one's life when it's OK to, you know, not try harder?..

I'm preparing for some fretjobs on my other guitars and can't bring myself to just start, while I have lots of equipment. Thanks for sharing! It's not that easy to tell the smoothness of frets in pictures, but if you haven't gone all out with the fine grain sand paper, grab those micro mesh foam pads. From 1500 up to 12000. Like Bending on glass. My Piezo-Problem is still in the works, maybe It's done this weekend. I just need the right mindset to do it calmly.

Don't worry about the round fretends. If you still want to change it, there is a good video for it from Highline Guitars.

Thanks for the Highline Guitar lead, i did come across some of his stuff in my initial "research" but had forgotten about him.

Man....that's a lot of videos he's got there!

I went to 2000 grit, then used one of those foam fingernail emery polishing stick things, cheap and effective for a final buff and polish. Use one for a quick fret polish every other string change on all my guitars in fact, keeps the frets shiny and knocks off any teeny scratches etc. Don't go overboard with it, just a quick once over.

Might give crowning another go, i was being a extra cautious as the SS is hard and smooth and you gotta give the file a fair bit of pressure to get it to "bite", and i'm thinking these frets..there's no tang or actual mechanical attachment to the fretboard, they're just glued on...really don't want to push too hard... etc.

P.S. Do you think there comes a point in one's life when it's OK to, you know, not try harder?

Absolutely!

Phew, good to know!
