Title: I'm Going Back To Work
Post by: Paul Marossy on June 30, 2010, 06:59:08 PM
Last Friday afternoon, I got a phone call from my former employer while I was in the movie theater with the family (got some gift tickets). I called him back after the movie was over. One of the six employees he has left after laying off 3/4 of the office last year is going to be out for a long while for an emergency bypass surgery due to clogged arteries. I think he's only like 31 or 32 years old. Anyway, they needed me to finish up something that this employee wouldn't be able to since he is out for probably 9 weeks. So I got that done over the weekend for him and yesterday he asked me if I wanted to go back to work for him, full time. This would be the third time that I have worked for this company. I've worked for them for a total of 10 years .

I was somewhat surprised but kind of half expecting this to happen based on recent events and knowing that they have been getting busier, so I have a job again. I was expecting to be out of work for another year. I will be taking a pay cut compared to what I was making before, but so has everyone else I have been told. It's a lot more money than I have been making lately! I think my first day will be July 7th.

The last 16 months has been a real pain in the rear, but we have been able to pay off some debts in spite of me not having a job, and we actually got our home loan modified, so what looked at first like major disaster has turned out for our good. In fact, I would go so far as to say that some of this stuff has happened through divine intervention. Anyway, just thought I'd let some of you old timers here no the good news. [8D]

Nice going, Paul! That's gotta feel good. My wife and I have thankfully managed to dodge the layoff bullets that have been flying around for the last couple of years, but we can definitely confirm your comment about pay cuts. Here's hoping things look better for us all ahead.

Good to know, congratulations!
The pay cut is half understandable half ridiculous. Actually a raise should be the least they could do to win you back for a third round without leaving the impression of shortchanging you. It may be bold (and a little crazy these days) but you should probably demand a raise once they're really back on track. It just shouldn't be good practice to fire and re-hire so I hope this time they learn their lesson and will take better care of someone who obviously is a high quality and loyal employee.

Greetings...
Nef

As I said on the phone, this is really great news for you and your family. 16 months is an incredibly long time to go without work. Hopefully, things will ramp up at your company. Hopefully, when the young fellow who had to vacate his seat is able, won't have the same experience as you did finding employment.99 Majik Blue Fly Deluxe

Yeah. I didn't have much faith when I lost my job. I was envisioning being literally homeless. We could have been, we were in a very very bad position financially when I lost my job. But it worked out that while our house was in foreclosure for six months and we were haggling with the mortgage company about getting a loan mod that we were promised, not having the house payment allowed us to pay off one car and so on. God took care of us. [8D]

Good to hear that, Paul. If you don't mind me asking, what exactly happens when someone looses his job in the US? What kind of social backup systems do you have in the states? Do you have a legal right to some kind of housing and enough money to continue to materially exist?

Depends on what state you live in. I had 6 months of unemployment, $390/week, which was only 25% of what I used to make at the job. This was funded from what my employer paid for unemployment taxes for the previous six months that I worked, IIRC. Then they do a percentage of your highest quarterly earnings from the previous year to arive at what you get paid, IIRC.

Then I had about five months of "emergency unemployment" which comes directly from the state. I could have gotten about another 26 weeks or so after I used up this emergency unemployment, but it turned out that I didn't need it because I was able to do things to make more money than I was getting on unemployment. Not hard to do, $390 a week isn't much, I could easily beat that building guitar pedals and doing pedal mods. As time goes on, they make it harder and harder for you to get anything more. So I just let it go.

If you still don't have a job after that, you are just screwed. You could try to get on Welfare and Medicaid, but you have to be practically homeless with like only $100 in the bank before you can get anything from them.

Nevada is a "right to work" state, which is a stupid term if you ask me. What it really means is that they can terminate you for any reason, or for no reason at all. You usually have no legal recourse unless you can prove that it was because of some sort of discrimination based on color, sex or race, which means you would have to hire an attorney and try to sue them. They also don't have to give you severence pay or anything, no notice, nothing.

If you have health insurance when they "right to work" you, they have to give you the opportunity to sign up for this insurance program called "COBRA" designed for people between jobs so they can have uninterrupted health insurance - which is also ridiculous, because it costs you more than twice for coverage than what you or your employer was paying for the insurance premium when you still had a job. In my case, that COBRA coverage would have been about $2300/month. So I haven't had health insurance since March 2009. I have always had my health insurance completely paid for by my employer for the 20 years that I worked in the consulting engineering field. That included the family.

There are a lot of things I could say from here about what I think about all this B.S., but I won't. Let's just say that there has been times when I wished I lived somewhere else where it's not all about profit and making money (as in having healthcare that you could actually afford, etc).

So I get to go back to work with an $8/hour pay cut and either no health insurance, or I have to pay for it myself now. Right now they have a thing set up with a $5,000 deductible. So it's really only there for major medical problems. At least I have a job again. I believe the true unemployment rate here is at least 20%, not the 14.3% from the latest report. There are a lot of people whose unemployment ran out a long time ago that aren't even on the radar anymore. IMO, we have a depression going on here in Las Vegas. The way I have had to live over the last year doing five part time "jobs" from home, it sounds a lot like stories I have heard of from the Great Depression, but I wasn't also starving along with my family.

Yeah, 16 months is a long time. I was truly expecting to be out of work for another year.

I guess time will tell if this new construction trend will be a flop or not. It's hard to buy a house if no one wants to loan you any money, unless you have $250,000 cash to buy something that is a decent size.

Thanks. Oh yeah, trust me, insofar as I can make it possible, I will never be in the position I was in when I lost my job in March 2009. It will always be in the back of my mind that my job could be here one day and gone the next. I have never been unemployed in my whole life, I have literally never been out of work for even a day since 1988.

I'll just be glad when this economic depression here goes away. Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in nation, 14.3%, and I believe it's actually much higher than that because there are a lot of people not even on the radar anymore, people whose unemployment benefits ran out a long time ago. I believe that the true unemployment rate here is more like 20% or more.

Just an update:

The local newspaper is saying that according to a new report, Las Vegas is in the TOP 5 worst economies in THE WORLD because of the lack of "economic diversity". I'm not surprised, we have no industries besides hotels, gaming and construction.

So far, job looks OK, but things have slowed down quite a lot. I hope it's just because of the holidays and stuff.

Agreed on the song potential, just those two sentences alone from Nef  have an impact.

"Brainverms come crawling and creeping and eat you when you're sleeping."
