Title: PTP Conversion 1st gen
Post by: 908ssp on May 17, 2007, 03:21:28 PM
Here is the drawing. Let me know if you find any mistakes so I can fix them right away. Basically this is converting a 1st generation guitar to a second wiring wise. I didn't for instance try to save the master volume because I wanted to use that hole for a kill switch. There might be some deviation in the wiring between this and the second but not functionally. A lot of stuff is kind of arbitrary for instance were the wires ground or which tab to use on a pot. I played the guitar last night and it worked fine. I did make some other changes which I will cover in another thread.

If you see any more mistakes please let me know. Larry found that I had the volume control wired so it turned the wrong way. I did that because I had the controls turned top to bottom so I corrected it. I guess I could have redrawn the pot so the legs were hanging down like they would be the guitar but that's more work than moving the wires. If anybody comes across templates for these parts please let me know.

Am I correct in thinking that all a tone pot does is send unwanted signal or frequency to ground?

908ssp you have a green wire from the Bridge pickup to the Mag Selector, you usually used green for ground. You used a black wire for the stereo only diagram. That's the only little thing I see.

Yup that is it. The capacitor acts as a filter allowing high frequency signal to pass and blocking low frequency. So the bigger the cap the more mids pass, the smaller the value the less mids pass. I think the stock Fly value is too big and it allows too much mids and so all the highs disappear and the mids get muddy.

Actually that is correct. You'll also notice that the neck pickup has the green/red pair going to the coil split and the neck uses the black/white pair it is like they wired them backwards. The Duncans use the same colors but the pickups are mounted backwards. The picture of the pickups isn't accurate here Dimarzios are both orientated the same way. Maybe I should change that?

Hi
i realize this is an old topic, but my jack and piezo tone control have finally failed on my 1st gen fly deluxe (have owned since 97) and i need to do this conversion. Do you have a higher res version of this diagram or could you tell me the value of the cap you recommend for the tone pot ( i can't make it out from the original post)? Also, did you use the black jack plate from allparts?

thanks

I can't say for sure the jack plate was Allparts but it is rectangular not square. Here is a couple more posts that might help you. The value of the cap is up to you. I tend to use one that is much higher than normal meaning it lets less treble bleed to ground giving me more mid range and making the tone less muddy.

Thank you so much. Going to order powerchip today. Could you recommend a better mag pup select switch? I go blind searching the forum and its a royal pain switching pups while soloing with the stock one. I realize you must have answered this question years ago, but i can't find it.

thanks again

They still have the switches.

You might want to check to see if they carry that switch with a longer bat. I have seen that the company that makes them but not that Allied carries them.
