Hey folks,

Does anyone have any experience of tuning their Fly down, using heavier gauge strings?

If so, what tuning are you using, and what gauge strings? How easy was it to do? Did getting the nut-slots widened, produce any fret-buzzing? Was the bridge able to take thicker strings without modification? In short, how practical a proposition is it?

I have seen Pain of Salvation twice in concert and Daniel Gildenlow who plays a Hardtail and a Classic tunes down to E flat and E flat with a drop D in concert. On the new CD "Be" he tunes to Drop C. The guitar sounds great...I would assume on a drop C tuning one would likely use at least an 11 or 12 gauge for tuning stability. 9's or 10's would probably not hold up. Way too slinky I would think.

I was thinking of tuning my deluxe to B now that Parker has officially said they can't do a seven string. I am thinking of using 12's to start with. I'll let you now how it turns out.

Yeah, I'm interested in tuning down to B too. I'm scared about ruining a fantastic guitar though... by damaging the nut, when it's filed to fit the thicker strings.

Anyone know, if I was to order a custom, whether I'd be able to specify what gauge strings I had on it? I guess that would be one way around it...

I think you have to buy parts direct from Parker now. You could buy another nut if one is available. You are right though, if you change to B and file the nut there is no going back!!!

I bought replacement graphtech nuts for my Fly from Parkers parts dept just a few weeks ago. You will still have to have the groove cut to depth.

908ssp, do you mean a replacement nut already comes cut for a set of 9-42 strings, or do you mean that it comes totally uncut?

No they aren't cut at all. I did get one from another source a long time ago that did have the cuts started. But I just checked the ones I have stashed and they aren't started at all. The nut is special it does have a shape unique to parker Flys and Niteflys.

Thanks, that's worth knowing.

I've noticed that the thicker a string is, it's generally better to have it raised higher up from the fretboard. Another concern is that if I filed the low-E slot to fit a 56 on the bottom, then I may get a buzz anyway, as the string wouldn't be high enough up from the board. But if there are un-filed nuts available, then that wouldn't be an issue, as I could file a replacement nut fromn scratch... or rather have a tech do it properly for me.

Is it pretty straight forward to replace the nut? Or is it glued in place in some kind of special manner, like the frets?

Maybe I should just see about ordering a custom...

It is glued but nothing special just a few drops of super-glue. Put a piece of wood against the nut fret side and give it a tap with a hammer and it will pop right out.
