Title: notation and tab software?
Post by: prjacobs on April 23, 2011, 11:57:35 AM
Hi all,
Does anyone have experience with software that creates tablature from written notes and vice versa.  I don't really need an audio engine, just a programs that's user friendly. Also is there a good program for writing traditional diagrams with frets, fingers, etc. to show chords?

Thanks,
Paul

Hi Paul,
Happy Passover!
I use Logic Studio.  I've never used the Tablature function but it does exist.  I just fired it up to see if it worked.  The tabs don't look anything like the crappy stuff you find on the web, but how accurate and usable they are is anybody's guess.
For fun, I took a section of a midi file of the MJ Beat it Solo (EVH) and turned it into a tab.
I'm linking it here for you so you can peruse at your own leisure.
Otherwise, Logic rocks.  Great composition and editing tool.

Thanks Patrick, Happy Passover to you as well. I usually write with Digital Performer and sometimes in Protools because my TV show uses it. I've been thinking a bit about adding Logic to my setup. Not only because of it's own great sounds and features, but for some live work. A good friend of mine uses Mainstage and it looks very user friendly.  What I saw online that looks impressive is Tabledit. I'm going to do a free trial unless someone else here suggests something else.
Best,
Paul

Power Tab Editor works from TAB to score, and can produce chord charts. Plus point is you can download it for free. However it does not work from score to TAB or, AFAIK, show which finger to use.

+1 for power tab, only slightly less for guitar pro.
