Title: Pickup Samples - Request
Post by: Patzag on October 16, 2018, 12:37:19 PM
Hi folks.
I wonder if anyone would be willing to record some samples of Gen 1, Gen 2 pickups and maybe a Les Paul PAF for comparison.
Ideally, the recordings would be done by the same person, on the same rig (or direct, no amplification at all) and just consist of a couple of chords played and left to sustain and decay.

The pickups in my Deluxe Hard tail and Classic appear to be the same but the guitars sound drastically different.  Wood only?  I think not.  I'd appreciate if someone could do the above.

Thanks,
Patrick

I have already done that, although it's across various videos with lots of playing and talking.

In this video I am comparing a Pre-Refined with Gen 2 Pickups to a Refined with Gen 2 Pickups:  https://youtu.be/O3KyhW8H2xc
In this video, I replaced the Gen 2 Pickups in the Refined with Gen 1:  https://youtu.be/6KKLKM5Eovs
In this video, I am comparing a Pre-Refined with Gen 1 Pickups to a Pre-Refined with Gen 2 Pickups:  https://youtu.be/al3ZVypgsOg

To clarify:
The white Pre-Refined Fly has always had Gen 2 pickups, but I didnt realize that initially, and may have referred to them as Gen 1 in earlier videos
The brown Refined had Gen 2 pickups that were replaced with Gen 1 pickups
The black and silver Pre-Refined has Gen 1 pickups

Have you confirmed that they are different generations?  Wood does make a HUGE difference.

My conclusion was that, in the same guitar/same wood with the same electronics.  Gen 1 and 2 sound the same, but Gen 2 are much hotter.

I always preferred the Gen 1s to the Gen 2s myself.

You can easily tell if pickups or gen 1 or gen 2. Gen 1 the dimarzio logo on the pickup is very small whereas Gen 2 it's much larger and takes up a quarter of the bottom right hand side of the pickup
