Pickup switch with longer lever for Deluxe?
« on: April 08, 2012, 10:36:00 PM »
I LOVE my Pre-refined Fly Deluxe --- except for the location of the mag pickup selector switch. It is pretty badly buried down there & has a short little lever. I switch pickup combos often in mid song & fumble with trying to get at the switch. Is there a replacement switch with a good deal longer lever that will fit & function properly? Anyone have a source or part number?
Any other solutions?

That's a good question. That switch is a four pole double throw, which is a very odd duck. I'm not sure where you would find something like that. Maybe Allied Electronics?

That is what I am looking for, but Alex says "if you have a lathe" (metal lathe I assume). I don't have access to one. I did a search on the 'Bay for switch extensions & all I can find is great big ones for truck controls.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

I remember that thread. Only thing is that it looks like it requires a whole new switch. In my '95 Fly, that toggle does not unscrew, it's a one piece affair. In other words, the toggle is not two seperate pieces. The only way to change it is to replace the whole switch or to be an extremely skilled machinist who can drill a hole/cut a shoulder on the existing toggle and thread it to receive a new toggle which is whatever length you want.

Paul, yes, my '96 is like that too. The lever/toggle part does not unscrew.

I think this switch might work http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=70152143

Just not 100% sure if it needs to be an ON-ON-ON type or not. I believe so, though.

Just kind-of sort-of maybe.

   http://marvac.com/detail.aspx?ID=39196

It has two set screws and I am thinking if the shaft hole is reemed out only so deep and with a snug enough slip fit, then it could ride high and the two set screws cinched tight on the tapering toggle shaft just might be something that could work. Specs state they are 3/4" tall. They are cheap enough, metallic and black. I just might try this myself. What do you think?  [?]

Paul, thanks a bunch. I looked again at the interior wiring of the switch with the incredibly delicate ribbon cable fitted around it & replacing the switch is beyond me. I can wire whole "regular" guitars no problem but I know my limits & am not touching that ribbon cable.

Tectonix- that looks interesting. Never thought of a knob as opposed to a lever. Black would look good too. I wonder if the bottom of the knob would have to have some bevels ground onto it so it could "rock" with the lever without hitting the body. I'll think on that one. Let me know if you try it!
That darn pickup selector is just hard to work quickly, especially with a pick already tying up the thumb & forefinger of the right hand.

9fingers--I don't think bevels need to be ground on the bottom as long as the shaft hole isn't drilled out too deeply into the knob. That way it can ride high and miss anything below when rocking. I actually like the idea of really feeling the difference between the round flat top knobs and this double concave top cut knob. I had always liked the big selector knob on the Tele. This place is close to me and I will pick up a couple this week if they are in stock. [;)]

It can be done with some de-soldering braid and patience. I am trying out the dual humbucker mod on my '95 Deluxe to see how I like it. I had to de-solder those wires from the switch, and while I was at it, I cleaned up the lugs in case I want to go back to stock. It was very easy to do, the solder they used is very easy to work with. The ribbon cable is not as delicate as it might appear, although it seems that the plastic may get more brittle with age. Anyway, with a delicate hand it could be done.

Well, I have done the deed on my '97 Artist. Thanks for starting this thread 9fingers. For me, this switching was not actually a major problem but I'm totally floored at how well these stove-top style knobs are working so far. No guitar mods were done for this, which I like as my own personal criteria.

If anyone can give me step by step directions on how to upload and post some clean pictures to the forum, I will share what I have done along with some comments.

Cool, I'd like to see a picture of that. To get photos to show up at the forum, you have to upload them to a site like photobucket and then link them here, with either a direct link to the picture or using the little image icon you can see when you make a post (it's the fourth one from the right) you can "embed" them in your post. Make sense?

Thanks, Paul. I will give it a shot tonight or tomorrow. My last ones turned out cluttered with URLs and addresses and things on them so I may have to ask for additional tips if I can't get them on cleanly. Thanks again. [:)]

I'm eager to see what you have done. I fumbled with the "hidden" pickup selector again at rehearsal last night. One of the great guys on the FDP suggested shortening a Strat plastic trem arm tip & fitting that over the switch, which might work too. If your "teleish" knob/tips work well with no mods that would be easier with the built in set screws. I'll be checking for pix!
