A2 Demo
« on: July 16, 2007, 08:34:20 PM »
Tonight I recorded a demo of my tweaked A2 settings. I only recorded the A presets (1/4 of the sounds) so that you can hear a comparison. These are Zoom's presets, tweaked by adding a bit more resonance (Air) to the sounds.

Here's a list of the sounds that you'll be listening to, saved as a JPEG:

And here's the demo audio file. It's just a simple fingerpicked phrase repeated for each of the 10 presets (0-9). I didn't go for the best take - just kept muscling on through.

http://bobmartin1111.com/PP/A2Demo.mp3

These can also get a lot brighter. I kinda favor the more mellow sound of this, but if anyone's interested in a brighter version of the demo, just let me know. Or, if you'd prefer to hear some full on strumming of these, I can do that too.

The technical stuff: Recorded using my 1997 Fly Concert. EQ Flat. Through Zoom A2.1U directly via Zoom's USB port into Mac. Captured in Logic Express. Only processing in Logic is a little bit of limiting on the final output.

Lemme know what you think!

Very nice demo and very nice playing.  I'm enjoying the A2 a lot myself.  Amazing for $100.  Thanks for taking the time to put this together Bob.

Bob,

That is very, very nice!  I like the same ones I did yesterday A0-A3 are my favorites and I'm really liking that J45 and the 000 Martin.

Thanks for recording these!

Darn those sound terrific. Do they all have a bit of reverb or do acoustics really sound like that? Since I have never owned a good acoustic and all I have ever heard are studio recordings I assume they are fattened up so I am curious about those tracks. It doesn't really matter I guess they sure sound good way better then the cheaper Zoom 504II.

Hey Alex,

They are the stock sounds, fattened up with a bit of the Air setting and re-eq'd a little where necessary, which helps give them the resonance without the honk. On some there's a little slap back, on others some room or hall, but these are the effects that Zoom assigned. I just wanted to show what you can get out of the box with minimal tweaking. If anyone is interested, I will gladly write out my settings for these first 10 sounds. Pretty much I applied the same basic principal to the other 30 sounds on the A2. There are some great effected sounds - one that's a dead-on Michael Hedges sound - another that's Ry Cooder's Paris Texas sound. Pretty amazing stuff.

I am about to post the same little ditty, this time played on an Artist with electric strings.

Here's the rest of the technicals: On the Concert, I am playing Elixir ExtraLight Acoustic Bronze Strings with the NanoWeb coating (10 to 50 something). On the Artist, I am playing the same string, but Nickel/Steel 10s for an electric guitar with the plain G.

Not a HUGE difference between the two - but I think you can hear the bronze strings doing their thing. But I am willing to bet even that difference could be minimized if someone were wanting to.

Simon - here's the link you requested: http://bobmartin1111.com/PP/A2DemoArtist.mp3

Pretty cool stuff here. I will try and post what the Aura does, but it's pretty much limited to one or two sounds. And they are GREAT sounds, but this Zoom pedal is soooo versatile and sounds great. Definitely room in the world for both.

Wow thanks Bob!

What a great job for comparing. What a great thing to do for us.

I would love to hear the bronze by itself too for comaprison.

They all sound good of course.

If I had to pick amongst them(for this piece),

Bronze: A2, A5, A3 are my top 3 for tone. (surprised myself on these picks)

Artist: A5, A3,  A2 (no idea why I ranked them differently for artist)

Custom '03 Gen1N/Gen2B Hardtail Artist; Custom '98 Neutered (trem blocked) DuncanModed Artist; Fly Deluxe 2000; Gibson ES137(4sale); 1974 K.Yari DY85; SchecterDisposable; Martin Backpacker/paddle combo;VoxAD30VT;SWR California Blonde(working again and sounding great)

Here's a little run at the processed settings. Arial Boundaries is the Michael Hedges setting and Paris Texas is the Ry Cooder setting. Tweaked a bit.

Not great playing on my part, but you'll get the idea.

And Bill, here's the Concert with no processing: http://bobmartin1111.com/PP/ConcertNaked.mp3

I am thinking the processing makes a pretty significant difference!

Hey John,
What's yer computer rig? I can help if you have a Mac. Perhaps a PC person can chime in and help if not. I wrote them as standard MP3s - high quality ones (320bps) but standard. They should play in iTunes. Perhaps if you had the free QuickTime plugin installed? Here's a link: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/quicktime72forwindows.html

I am pretty sure that would put you on the right track.

Lemme know!

They have a guitar version called the G2 that is as big a bang for the buck as the A2.  I also have their G9.2tt and it's a monster and competes well with the POD XT Live and the Vox ToneLab series.
